Most people don't care because SONY does not know how to do logistics. Their phones don't show up here or, if they do, they're very limited.
By 'here' I take it you mean in the USA? I can only speak for Europe - Sony's phones are well released here, and they are all over the place.
I think they sell well here. I'm not sure why their release in the USA is so slow. Essentially, I'm happy to compare Sony's flagship phones these days with flagship phones from other brands.
To the OP who owns Sony shares - on my view, there is a general sort of Sony 'hate'. I had the latest Sony Vaio Z series (with sheet battery) and it was great - but many of my colleagues (who buy macbooks, or else entry level lenovo laptops) would complain about this sony 'tax'. A sheet battery was worth 140 euros to me, but it wasn't worth it to the mac users. The long and short of this is that Sony has historically been a premium brand but there is some kind of cultural resistance to their brand ever since the Walkman came out. I still remember my Sony Sport Discman (the yellow water resistant one). I have been a fan of their innovations for a long time, but I am a different sort of purchaser as well. After my Vaio Z was stolen I was going to buy another one, but the Vaio disappeared, and I bought a razer blade (2014) instead.
Worse, on cell phones, a lot of people were introduced to cell phones with samsung or iphones, and there is a brand loyalty to be concerned with here as well. Despite the fact that Sony does make premium handsets, there are certain websites that try to discredit them by stating falsehoods like 'the xperia z is not being updated...' (mine has had 4.4 since early July, I think).
