Game runs perfectly for me. I had to bump the default max fps to 60 (defaults to 30??). I have an HD7950, and everything is on high except for shadows. Runs very smooth, four hours of game play, and no crashes.

Ran great for three hours before I had my first crash. 4790k and a 970 solid 60fps with everything on max at 1080.

Doesn't Steam allow refunds? If i don't like this when I fire it up later tonight, back she goes.

Only for a certain amount of time.
I was going to type up some long response, but honestly I don't think that's needed here because it's exactly what most reviews have said.

Here's the breakdown based on my first 4 hours:
  • It's almost exactly what I thought it would be. I have no idea what people were expecting, but I don't blame the developer for some of the disappointment as I'm getting almost everything I thought I would based on all the videos I saw.
  • Visuals are a let-down (on the ps4 at least). Texture pop-in is quite distracting when flying, and animations aren't great. I hope the draw distance is better on the PC.
  • The FPS mechanics are clunky, but that might just be me not playing many FPS on the PS4. Again, probably better on PC and there's not much in the way of shooting (yet)
  • The first few hours are basically a loose tutorial that introduces you to the game mechanics without actually feeling like a tutorial. It was really well done and something that fits really well with this type of game.
  • I can see that after getting through the mechanics, and playing for a while, that things may get repetitive... so many out there are going to be bored after a few ours, but some of us will still get a lot of gameplay out of it.
So I know it's going to sound crazy, but for me the game it reminds me most of right now is Just Cause 2. Is it the same genre? Nope. Does it have cool explosions? Not really. So what in the hell do I mean by that?

Pretty much every single bad thing you can say about NMS was also true about JC2. JC2 had next to no campaign, it was incredibly shallow. You visited copy/pasted bases that were pretty easily dealt with. There were bases you could destroy everything in, which could be fun but also was very repetitive. Despite all of this "shallowness" I dumped more hours in JC2 just messing around than any other game during the 360 generation. The map was huge, and even though everything I did was very repetitive I was never really bored. I get the same sense out of NMS, if to a lesser degree. I can understand people finding it boring, and I myself will get bored of it some day, but right now I think most people that don't like just don't like a game that throws a handful of mechanics at you and gives you the freedom to do what you want.

The ONLY thing that's really holding me back from recommending it fully is not having a f'ing map. It's so easy to get lost in caves and there's no good way to find your way out. A diablo style mini-map that fills in as you visit things (you know, like an actual explorer would do) would have been perfect. I'm so mad that such a simple omission might potentially ruin the experience for a lot of people, but it really needs to be highlighted. You WILL be pissed off that there's no map, and it's a damn shame.

Anyway, wait till it's cheaper but I wouldn't discount it completely.
Sounds like what I was thinking it was going to be like. The visuals on ps4 put me off a whole lot and I definitely don't want to pay full price on PC either.

Seems like a game you can easily get bored of but fire up anytime you have nothing else to do, as you won't be lost in the sense of what's going on from the last time you played.

I'm gonna try and watch it when I'm home. Are you gonna link it here?

A couple warnings first. It'll be a few more hours before I post it. I have to trim the ends a bit and it has to finish processing. I'm about to head out with the wife for a little while but should have it done and posted tonight. Also, I'm no streamer. There's no commentary what so ever as I was recording more for myself than anything. I might start doing commentary for the rest, if nothing else to remember what I was thinking in the early hours. So, if you feel like watching almost two hours of me figuring the game out from scratch (after avoiding any info about the first hour so I would experience it blind) and then starting to explore a few other planets, it'll be here.

I had to bump the FPS setting up as well (30 default is quite lame). Other than that and a few hitches early on it ran quite well.

You WILL be pissed off that there's no map, and it's a damn shame.

hate the limited storage

These are my two real gripes. No map and limited storage early on.

The visuals on ps4 put me off a whole lot and I definitely don't want to pay full price on PC either.

IMO it looks quite a bit better than on PS4. I have the terrain generation setting at max, though.

So far from what I have seen game looks rather meh. Mods might make it much better, if they are possible. I also really hate the Computerized Voice.

Played 3-4 hours today on PC, runs fine on my computer at low settings at 1440p, solid 40-60fps in all areas.

Exactly what I was expecting to be honest, i can see myself sinking many hours into this game, already have learned a good 20-25 words of an alien language and improving my status with them so I can learn some more.

I also expect to see far more dangerous things as I get deeper and deeper into the universe, already I have some nice multi-tool upgrades for combat if I need them.

Some really bad flickering talking to NPC's in buildings, other than that it doesn't run that bad

The "poor" graphics, now solely judging from screenshots, actually appeal to me. Each and any time I am remembered of "Outcast", this game from the 90s. The colors and the overall style of the graphics seems very similar although Outcast did voxel rendering.

The "fix" that TotalBiscuit recommended in a video worked wonders for me. Turn all graphics settings to lowest, apply & restart - then change them to what you want and restart again. Just played 2 hours and it ran great. It was a total mess before I did that.

.

Ha! I know exactly what you mean! My early thoughts about the game were that it would fall into the JC2 trap where you're really just running around to do things to tick off boxes, for no real purpose, and there's really only 5 different things to do, dozens of times each. But JC2 crushed my soul and I stopped playing after about 15 hours. It is fun and feels cool for a while, but without any real purpose to carry you along (like GTA or Saint's Row), the repetitiveness is just crushing. That's really the heart of that game and what I thought NMS would be way back when.

Still, I'm going to picking this up some time down the line after a bit of polish.

Went to a barren moon. Found it was covered in hundreds of monoliths. Found the caves had unlimited objects that I could sell to the outpost next door for 35k each. I'm rich! Bringing in ~750k every 15 minutes. I am naming this moon cheathappend.

Pics or it didn't happen =P

Played more today, still enjoy it. Only other annoyance I have is that I can't seem to view the upgrades I've collected if I don't have an open slot. I want to see if I have better attachments for the multitool, but can only see them if I dismantle something to get a free slot.

I like it. It installed quickly. It runs rock solid at 60fps at 1080p on a gtx970 with all settings at max.

I'm confused about some things. I assume you use the scanner to search for resources but what are the top resources I should have always since space is limited.

The jetpack seems to be useless. Boost runs out way too quickly. I hate how you have to keep replenishing your radiation protection.

How do you navigate to the next planet? And how do you apply the warp drive? (Sorry going from memory. I'm about to start it up again though).

Does the game save where you left off when quit?

Also what do you do with the animals you discover? Lol they keep running away.

Very well.

In this pic you can see several Vortex Cubes, this is right at the entrance of a cave.

More.

Two minutes later.

Flying back you can see a monolith and drop pod, these are everywhere. Note my 22 inventory slots in the previous pic.

And after selling.

I logged on just to get these pics. This run took 7 minutes total. Also this world is temperate, no radiation, heat or cold to worry about just life support.

Graphics enthusiasts including me will go nuts if a game like this ever comes out with the detail/texture style of Black Desert Online, ARK or Witcher 3. If I live long enough to see its release.

My first planet was named hottubsomethingaliensomething and I woke up in a lake. Sadly I didn't get to save before the game crashed as I alt-tabbed out to turn on voice chat. On restart, the new starting planet name wasn't as cool and was radioactive.

I've got 1.5 hours in, still debating whether to refund or not. It has potential but the various problems are worrying. Game was having big stutter issues early on but seemed to settle down after 30+ minutes. Ran decently enough at 1080p, 100fps limit (game had it set to 30 at start), 100 fov on my 8350 @stock with a 7870. Crimson 16.3.2 drivers.

My main gameplay negatives were the inventory management simulator 5000 with click and hold requirements. Wonky flight controls with mouse/kb made flight/space flight not very fun. My first death was due to not being able to fly out of a cave entrance easily.

The more you play, the more you figure things about about the resources and what to keep on hand. On your first planet you should find out that your life support systems need red elements, and your environment protection needs yellow. The ship is usually charged with plutonium specifically.

You can find upgrades to your suit carrying capacity. Once you find out what building shape those upgrades come from, you'll be on the lookout for them. You find technology to upgrade the jetpack as well.

If you haven't figured out how to navigate to the next planet yet, then you just need to keep following the main objectives because they walk you through what you need to craft in order to jump systems.

Any animals and plants you discover are added to your log book (not sure how to get to it on PC, but it's the start/options button on PS4). There you can rename any discovery you made and upload it to the cloud for others to see if they land on your planet

Has anyone tried playing on PC with a ps4 control or Xbox for that matter? I'm just wondering about the flying part since it would be odd with a keyboard and mouse.

One thing I found and its now posted on the reddit thread for this game is that in the setting G-Sync is on even if you do not have a g-sync monitor

go to Steam\steamapps\common\No Man's Sky\Binaries\SETTINGS
edit "TKGRAPHICSSETTINGS.MXML"
and change the setting for Gsync to False
Source

I found this when trying to see if there is a way to turn off the Chromatic aberration + Scan lines + grain + vignetting

I have tried a DS4 and it works fine, but the controls were inverted for me at the time and I didnt feel like opening up the options to fix it so I stuck with mouse/KB.
