I think i will grab it, just more Minecraft with much better graphics, and maybe a bit more depth. Still I love exploring, if they make enough parts so that all the mobs places dont seem the same, it should be fun.

Is it like Minecraft? Do you have the ability to break down and rebuild these worlds at all? I can't find find a clear answer anywhere.

Same thing with the multiplayer question - If I'm flying around will I be able to see / shoot at / explore with other players? Or is the multiplayer aspect just a shared database of names and places that updates my own single-player universe?

I'm having a hard time finding a clear summary of what the game mechanics actually are. May just need to wait for reviews to come out?

I don't think you can tear down and build stuff like the scale of Minecraft. It's online but I don't believe you ever run into other players. You can run into planets and things other players have found and stuff they left behind.

This is a red box rental for sure for me. All I need is about an hour to see if I like it and chances are I'm not going to and will probably get bored. I need a reason to play a video game be it fun gameplay, mechanics, story, characters, or both.

That's how I feel too. I'm curious about how far procedural content generation has advanced and this game is probably a showpiece for the latest and greatest. But I still can't imagine how exploring algorithm-generated worlds will stay interesting at all after the first 10 or so without some gameplay/story/player competition reason to be doing it.

I really wish games would get over the whole resource and crafting thing. Never have enjoyed it as a primary game mechanic, and now they throw it in EVERYTHING.

While the forums were off the air, a couple big developments. Only three days prior to release, it has been confirmed that the PC version is pushed back to August 12th for further "enhancements." The second is that anything you've seen streamed up to this point is not representative of the final game. What will be shipped final is not what has been leaked or made available.

August 12th isn't that bad. However with this being primarily single player, there isn't much benefit in paying launch price.

Other than I want to play it now and I'm out of other space games to play?

In the US both were to launch on August 9th. As of yesterday they pushed the PC release back to the 12th. Many suspected this based off vague wording on their website, but it's irritating that they waited until yesterday to make it official.

I made preparations ahead of time for about a week to play it on the 9th, and now it's delayed... for just three days? The trolling is strong with Hello Games. That's just great (it is frustrating). I suppose D3's Season 7 will help me burn those extra 3 days fast enough.

It's not trolling. These kinds of comments always make me laugh. A game gets pushed back to obviously work on it more so it's a better game and people think the developers are purposely doing it to piss off gamers.

Y-yes... I was... actually... thinking that. Dude, I know that they're not actually trolling, per se... you know? Like, really.

Do you always perceive everything you read literally on that level? Couldn't you tell that I'm frustrated? You obviously didn't realize it, but I wasn't actually accusing them to be trolls. You couldn't read between the lines just a bit? I was merely expressing my frustration with their decision to delay the game, of course though it had to be specifically the PC version, why not huh? However, to express my frustration I probably should have said something along the lines of "Ah well, I'm super happy that they've decided to work their ass off for three extra days to make the PC version better! I love Hello Games so much! In fact I love waiting just a few extra days! Oh my oh my! If only all developers out there could delay only one version of their game that happens not to be the one for consoles for just a few days! Hehe! I'm very excited right now!" to avoid the Literal Police's scrutiny. But really, thanks for explaining the obvious. I guess that we've mutually made each other laugh then, if anything (my comment made you laugh, and yours certainly did make me laugh too).

The question is, how much will they be able to "improve" the game in 3 days? Even a minor change requires weeks of beta testing to ensue it works properly and doesn't break something else. Same if they were to discover a game breaking bug at the last moment - fixing it in panic in a matter of days risks causing more problems rather than fixing them.
This kind of small delay most likely has something to do with licensing, distribution, that kind of thing, rather than actual game code tweaks.

The developer tweeted that they are making PC specific tweaks like ultra-wide support for the overlays. Nothing major, but that's part of the problem. They could have launched and patched it in.

Word from the leaks is that you can beat it in 30 hours.

So you took a week off work just to play a game?
Did you also load up on groceries and prepare for total vegetation?

The developer has countered with any information from leaked copies are not representative of the final game. A day zero patch will be dropping with changes worth a month's work from them.

  • The Universe – we changed the rules of the universe generation algorithm. Planets have moved. Environments have changed biomes. Galaxies have altered shape. All to create greater variety earlier. Galaxies are now up to 10x larger.

And if it didn't have that on launch, we'd see tons of Reddit posts crying about it. I understand people have been super hyped about it. The first time we all saw it, it looked awesome. But delays happen even to games with huge studios working on them. This is a tiny team and if they want to delay it to make it better then so be it. Look at how crazy people are over this. Threaten to kill someone just for reporting on the delay.

Unfortunately I'm not going to be able to play this game until the end of the week because I'm moving and my Internet isn't getting hooked up until the end of the week so I'll be busy reading this thread and all of your opinions on it and reading reviews.

I'll definitely want some opinions too once this releases. Right now there doesnt seem to be much interest for me based on just exploration alone.

Wait I thought it was just 1 galaxy roughly the size of a real galaxy? Your goal is to make it to the center fo the galaxy and there they say galaxies are 10 x's larger? which galaxy are you supposed to make it to the center of?....Makes no sense.
I think they are misusing the word universe and galaxy and originally they said all planets are life sized and space is realistically similar in distances between worlds which means this patch should not be needed less they lied to begin with.
*edit: I think they meant solar systems, not galaxies. I can't believe they of all people would mistake that.

Then again, I have absolutely no reason to trust the words of any developer before a game launches, do you? Seriously how many freaking times over the last 30 years have we been lied to? Just flat out lied to.

There are multiple galaxies within the universe. You're making your way to the center of the universe, not the center of a galaxy.

They never said planets were realistic distances. They are life sized, though. This we know from leaked videos of early copies.

If this game doesn't feature a decent combat system, then I'll be letting this one pass me by. It's starting to look like Terraria vs Starbound. While they both feature 2D building and exploration, Terraria focuses heavily on weapons and combat whereas Starbound focuses more on furniture and color schemes. That being said, Terraria is still an incredibly fun game to play, whereas Starbound bored me to tears after 15ish hours with the 1.0 release.

Does anyone else cringe when a development company can't get the copyright year correct on their site?

This is probably going to be key. There seems to be enough shooting elements involved that it's going to need to work well to be fun. A poor FPS experience may very well ruin the experience, even if the exploration side is entertaining.

I still haven't played Terraria but yeah, after 10 or so hours in Starbound, I started to get rather bored.
