I really wish games would get over the whole resource and crafting thing. Never have enjoyed it as a primary game mechanic, and now they throw it in EVERYTHING.
I know right. Pisses me off. I would love to see a game in which there is no resource/treasure gathering at all.

Was watching some people play on the PS4 last night and it feels like the game was over-hyped. Looks similar to destiny but more crafting and less action. Major focus was on gathering and crafting.

I never ended up getting starbound, though it's been on my wishlist for years. I can vouch for terraria being awesome though.

I'm getting leery of these "big promise" games. Although it seems to be on track, star citizen is going to be really awesome, or just fail miserably. I just hope this game doesn't end up like Starforge. Those devs, I think they're called CodeHatch or something similar, are scammers and have cut and run from the game. Then, they did it again with a medieval game with similar promises. Those guys need a good lawsuit or two.

First impressions are telling me exactly what I didn't want to hear... that it's turned into more of a survival game than an exploration game. Constant monitoring of resources with an inventory that is too limited sounds like a very annoying game to me. No good

That's my impressions from reading the reviews. The inventory system really forces you into managing resources over exploring. Hopefully that is something that could be patched in the game at a later date.

Ars Technica has a 12 hour play impression up for the PS4 version - http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2016/...s-of-no-mans-sky-soaring-past-disappointment/

Sounds like a lot of big game launches these days . . . bad out of the gate / over-hyped

I was really hoping this was going to be a good one, maybe with some feedback and Patches this one will get closer to what was expected.

Pretty much anymore I just have to sit out all these big launches and wait for the dust to settle (Patches).
It's sad really, I've got a few EA games that are really good now, and they're still under development.

Have to wonder if they actually have the resources / talent to pull off what they're wanting to do here, or if it's just too much for Systems to handle yet.

Let's see what the PC version is like.

I'm hoping that maybe it's mod friendly, as the biggest issue I'd have with this game is the same issue I had with fallout 4 (which was easily modded). Any game that relies heavily on collecting junk shouldn't have much of a limit on carrying capacity. For me, it adds more annoyance than anything, and I don't care about realistic carrying capacity when it's such a core part of the game. If I could mod carrying capacity like I did in Fallout, then I'll probably enjoy myself much more. If not then it'll just be another game that doesn't live up to expectations.

A lot of games these days, even big name games, are just a lot of flash and lacks a lot of the core substances. I'm very wary about doing any sort of pre-ordering these days, especially with stuff like Twitch available where you can watch others play first.

I've long stopped pre-ordering stuff. Hopefully the "core" gameplay will involve something more than just "a quintillion planets and nothing to do". I remember Frontier: Elite 2's procedurally generated star systems. Whilst that added a larger sense of freedom, it was everything else (chasing "Elite" status, upgrading ship, high risk military faction / assassination missions, etc) that actually made the game fun. I hope there's going to be more to NMS than another "crafting for the sake of crafting, then repeat ad nauseum in a new environment" one-trick pony grind-fest.

There is no reason to pre-order games anymore, or even to buy them in the first few months. Games are not really content complete anymore at launch. If I wait a few months there will be more content (DLC), fewer bugs (patches), better graphics (driver optimizations), and if the game is any good a robust community (and if it is not any good I've saved my time and money), all at a cheaper price (steam sells). The game industry has designed a system that rewards gamer players to wait a few months before playing a game.

The only games I would pre order are those in some type of series like last of us or GTA, uncharted. Mainly because I've known them to be good.

I can't tell if this is intentional trolling or legit reviews, but it's showing a 5.3 on Metacritic right now. I rarely base a game off reviews and tend to watch trailers or gameplay videos and judge for myself, but I can't justify spending $50+ on a game with reviews like it's currently receiving.

http://www.metacritic.com/game/playstation-4/no-mans-sky/user-reviews?sort-by=date&num_items=100

It's hard to decipher if it is legit or not. The best way to determine is to watch other people play it live on stream.

Sometimes a pre-order is for something besides the game itself. I pre-ordered Mafia III Collectors Edition as I really wanted those LP's, I also wanted the game but I won't be playing it for a few months anyway.

This game I was actually gifted by my brother, I'll give it a go as I enjoy the exploration/crafting/gathering games like Terraria, Starbound, Creativerse etc.

The review scores are from Players, not Critics/Reviewers, so take that for what it's worth.

The few Reviewer blurbs I've scanned are a bit mixed and still undecided/unscored at this point - basically incomplete and they're still checking things out.

This is a SP game only, not MP, but I'm not sure if it's one of those requiring Online . . . will have to look into this.

@Linux23 - PS4 version came out today, PC version comes out Friday (not all Countries).

Yeah, for all my hopes, this looks like it will involve more work than I want from a video game. If it turns out I can have the exploring anti-game I'm after in this, I'll happily give it my money (maybe hacks/cheats will provide it). As it stands, I think I'm out because survival-work is not appealing. I wanted much more fantasy & freedom to the exploration.

Now that I'm looking at footage it reminds me of the game ARK. I hate that game. I hope there's more depth to it than survival.

Its nothing like Ark. Ark is a semi-MMO survival game with heavy crafting. This game is much more about exploration, and there is "basically" no multi-player aspect to it.

The game is not SP only. The universe has everybody in it. Its only that the universe is so large, that it makes seeing other players unlikely.
