I have a Dell P991 Trinitron monitor and am running XPSP2 Pro. More often than not it boots up and no video. I've changed video cards and I've moved the monitor to another box and it's not the monitor ...I'm pretty sure that it's the computer or part of it... a Dell PowerEdge SC400 with an unsupported AGP slot. Windows XP blue bars screen show up but then it turns off the monitor(s). First I have a question about the bios in that it has two parameters to work with ...AGP instead of onboard and number of MBytes. I know the card is 128 MB and have it set as such. It can also be switched to Auto. Then there is the S1 or S3 mode and auto start. I've tried all positions.
Somtimes it will boot up and "click" the monitor on and last. Sometimes it clicks on and then off during boot well after the mouse and keyboard become active. In the control panel there are options for controlling "power". I've checked the bios and power options against other computers and set them accordingly.
This may or not be an OS question, but I almost always get excellent direction here. I may need to be in the "hardware" forum and I can post there, if I can't the right suggestions here, so don't beat up on me. Is this a hardware issue? When I tried another video card it almost became reliable but after a couple of restarts it also failed. What more should I suspect is the culprit? Hardware? I have several images of the OS to change to and neither of them succeed for long.
Has this happened to anybody? ...that can help me. Is this suspect of a failing power supply? Anybody want to buy a computer, or ocean-side property in Ohio?
