My cell phone is already cheaper than my home phone, but I don't talk very much. I get 1000 minutes a month and never use it all. I guess if I talked more, a whole lot more, it might be worth concidering, maybe. Very expensive.

They are illegal because they may interrupt other official communication, I think each frequency scale has specific usage. I might be wrong though.

I bought one of these phones last year. It was for use over-seas. It worked relatively well for about 1/2 to 3/4 mile without any antenna (depending on terrain and walls). I added a 10 foot antenna and my range went to about 4 miles and then started to break up. I then added a 50 foot tower and my range went to about 20 miles. For my purpose, it was what I needed. Overall, if I had to do it again, I would not. Too much trouble and the clarity is not near as good as cellular. These phones tend to be 'line of sight', so if you live on a mountain, you will get great reception, otherwise, it's crap.

And people are worry about a cell phone frying your brain with a few milliwatts of power. The handset on these things are more than 5 watts the last time I looked at them. And the base is like 35 Watts!!!..Talk about brain frying...

They are illegal because of CAPITALISM my friend. Do you know how much money the wireless companies would lose? Not to mention revenue the government generates from bandwidth regulations.
The phones are deemed legal to use in other countries, just not ours.

Don?t get me wrong, I love capitalism. But sometimes big $$$ gets in the way of improving the way we live. My 2 cents?

I doubt that's why bajel, otherwise Dialpad and other internet to phone communication wouldn't be around. Hell, i use at least $1000 worth of calls a month through dialpad.

They're illegal because they do disrupt other frequencies. I had a neighbor down the street who use to have an illegal CB or something, and everybody in the neighborhood was hearing crap on televisions and speakers that were off (wasn't continual, but often enough to be freaking annoying and serious enough to get the law involved).

Anyone with a lot of land the Engenuis phones are great. The nifty 40 mile range phones are really only valuable to farmers in the middle of nowhere with no good cellular reception. If I had a farm in the middle of Kansas I would be sure to find a way to smuggle one in... but then again if I lived in Kansas I would be sure to leave.

The SARs (specific absorption rates) on those phones are probably more than 1.6 Watts/kilogram. With wattage like that, you'll be in some serious trouble w/ continued use.

I heard about these being used in the Pacific Rim about a year ago, sounds like a good idea. For those of you that get cheaper rates with your cell phones, who are you using as your long distance provider? It's easy to pay 5 cents/min or less for long distance nowadays.

They guy who sold me the phone basically said that they higher you get the antenna, the farther your range. I was living on a mountain, so it wasn't too bad. The reason I was told that it is illegal in the US is because it does not comply with the FCC, too much wattage.

Ummm, as an attorney having previously worked for the F.C.C., I'd recommend staying away from these. For now.
