And its ATOT'ers like you guys that give ATOT'ers bad names. Does insulting me make you guys feel any better? Do you think slamming me on an internet message board will prove anything to anyone? I figured I would try and ignore all the slamming, but you trolls that insist on bashing me for a situation I was trying to make light of, and a situation I was not particulary proud of, required some retort. If you continue to talk about it, I suggest some counseling, some long-term therapy, and maybe a look in the mirror everyday to tell yourself you are good enough, and don't have to put down people on an internet message board to make yourself look better. There were only 3 or 4 of you that actually resorted to personal attacks..but hey, stop a minute and think about what you are saying.

Well she did. not only that she wrote a nasty letter to the local paper (which actually helped my business). When we got into court the judge told her to stop wasting his and my time and he told her that i had NOT ripped her off but i could have.

After court she was all sorry and apologized.

geez, what an idiot... all of that trouble and she couldn't just research into what is actually faster. I abhor people with limited tech knowledge but extreme confindence... an accountant at work just talked to me for 10 minutes about DOS... earlier this week a server went down, and maybe 10 minutes after I brought it up I saw her in the hall and told her it was back up.. and she said "Oh I know, I already fixed it." I just laughed.

I don't think I ever got personal... I was just pointing out that you charged her $270 to tell her to buy a Dell. This is not good service. Sometimes its hard to see things from outside of a personal viewpoint and I wanted you to see it from another angle. If you did this to one of my friends, I would call you out in person and try to get the money back. You don't deserve the money just because you spent 13 hours on the project. You didn't do anything to help her. Is this really your job?

well i dont expect everyone to research computers. there are a lot of things to look up. But then again her son was going to school majoring in C.S. so she believed what he said. In the long run it actually helped my business.

still ended up going out of business but it did help! heh

LOL! That story made my day.

I currently fix/help install hardware for friends as long as they take me out for lunch or dinner. I used to do it for free, but the requests just kept on coming. Some have the audacity to ask me to take a day off to "hang out" with them...and oh yeah, fix their computer. Punk! Something as little as a dinner is enough to deter most of my cheap friends.

I don't charge money though. By only charging a meal, they know I'm still doing them a favor. By charging for the service, they'll figure I'm doing a job and they'll think future problems would be covered under this one time cost. I also state that if I fry their machine (it never happens, of course), well, it's their fault and they should have brought it to someone who knows what they're doing...just to scare them a little. The only reason why I do it at all is to prevent them from being screwed by those mom and pop computer stores. I have a friend whose ram, graphics and motherboard were swapped out for a cheap miniATX with built-in graphics and ridiculously little ram. He didn't notice anything was wrong for over a year and no longer had the receipt to fight it. Another friend was charged $1000 for repairs on a computer that was probably worth $500 at the time.

heh i had friends/family ask me to cme over to "hang out" also. finally i got tired of it and started chargeing dinner +6pack of beer of my choice.

that cut down 90% of the calls. the only one that calls is my dad. Most of the time he buys me dinner and still pays me! heh

Good thread!

Saul, you suck. Give the woman back her $270. Never, ever offer to fix anyone's computer again. Ever. I bet 2/3 of this board could get that system up and running just fine for that price. XP home is only $90. Format and reinstall takes two hours.

waggy, nice story. How much did she pay for the system?

Personally, I only do computer work for food, mostly for family. A nice home cooked meal for a few hours of repair work (with no guarantees) is a fair trade. If any job takes more than two hours the computer goes home with me and I fix it over the next week or so (while watching TV or playing bf1942... gotta do something while windows is installing or the critical updates are downloading).

Haha. This isn't exactly "charity" but..here goes.

A lady from my temple called me, as my MOTHER gave her my #. She was having problems with her computer. So I told her I would have to come and look at it, so I made an appointment to come to her house on a saturday.

My worst fears were confirmed. Home-built computer. Cheap parts, cheap motherboard, athlon (cheap), cheap everything. Windows 2000. Spyware/adware/bonzi buddy/IE toolbars/pop ups on startup out the WAZOO. This was causing many problems, and every few minutes a message would pop up asking me if I wanted to keep previous version of some files (windows file protection.) Ok..I didn't have a Win2000 CD..so I just found a way to disable the message. Problem solved. I get paid.

3 days later. Called again. The computer won't boot up. Apparently disabling that message has caused problems, and now the computer doesn't boot up. I forget the message I got, but the computer indeed would not boot up. I decided to format. She was OK with that, and since I didn't have Windows 2000...I said screw it, and loaded up Windows ME. I get paid.

1 week later. She is experiencing random lockups. I come over, and I have no idea what is locking it up. It HARD froze, out of nowhere. I updated bios, updated drivers, did everything I could think of. Seemed to work fine. I get paid.

3 days later. Same thing, locking up all the time. I confirm this, and try to fix it again. No pay this time, I refused.

I come back later sometime..I stopped keeping track of days at this point. She then offered me the information that the guy who built the computer (a friend of their son, who no longer lives in the area) told her that that Windows ME would not work, as it locked up. Of course...cheap hardware, AMD based system (not slamming AMD but the cheaper stuff always seems to be much more incompatible), it made sense. I told her I did not have Windows 2000 (I lied), and I couldn't load it on the computer. She then asked the question I was waiting for the whole time..."Would it be easier if I just bought a new computer?" THANK GOD!! I told her yes, go to Best Buy or whatever and just get a new one. She did, and I have not heard from her since.

Total hours spent at her house : 13 hours
Total cost of repairs: $270.00

Yea..I know, cheap. I didn't charge her for alot of it, I was trying to be nice. I no longer do sidework for anyone, except family and family friends.

wow, you suck. i'd be embarassed to charge for "service" so shoddy.

for 13 hours, it wasn't that cheap especially with so many problems.

Well considering HE caused a lot of the problems yeah i think that was overcharge.

First he disables a error message then gets surprised when it wont boot up. So to fix that he puts Win ME on it witch is one of the most bug ridden OS's MS has put out. Then he blames it on the AMD system, i don?t think really knows enough to be trying to work on someone?s system.

Why he would come on ATOT and brag about what he did is beyond me. He really screwed that poor women over. Hopefully he doesn?t "help" anyone else out.

I hope you feel better by posting this. I wasn't bragging, I was posting a terrible experience. Overcharge? I think not. For the time I spent on it with multiple problems, none caused by me, I could have charged much more, and she was willing to pay much more, but I refused. I don't know what cave you are living in, but I charge $45 an hour to work on a persons computer. God I wish you people could have worked on this stupid machine yourselves, then maybe you would realize how bad it really was. Other than that..you are just talking out of your ass, and couldn't be more wrong about all of it.

dude,

you are right. ignore the asshats and enjoy the money.

relax

You certainly don't seem to be complaining. No one is a "nice guy victim" EXCEPT by choice.

I never mind helping out friends BUT do mind being "taken for granted" as though my services are "free". Those (insensitive) people, I CUT OFF from tech support as I become too BUSY (all of a sudden). Sometimes they do come to appreciate my (future) support after they pay SOMEONE ELSE $45 an hour to screw up their computer,

I only work on my family's pc's (including my wife's side). Here's a tip for others in this position- first as that Saul guy illustrated, don't even think of doing the work unless you are equipped with the right tools (mechanical and software), knowledge, and system information.

In my case I've got most everyone on a dell. I've got all their service tags recorded and have downloaded the service (not user) manuals
and diagnostics for each pc. For those with "custom" rigs I've got all the info on each component used. For each pc I've touched or redeployed, I make sure I get everything configured and running smoothly and then IMMEDIATELY image the drive and store the image files on my server. For my inlaws I've also setup VNC so i can take care of small issues remotely which is a big help...

Basically, just get organized and you'll use up far less of your personal time.
