unacceptable. instead of a late fee, they impose a very large late fee basically and toss u the rental disc pretty f*cked up if u ask me... they shoulda just stuck with the old way.. with a lower charge perhaps. they make 250 million a year off late charges u know.. i'm sure they figured that it would even out. bleh.. don't support blockbuster and their censoring asses. if it weren't for netflix kicking their asses with widescreen bb would still be pushing pan and scan.

This is just another way to scam and piss off the customer. I've never had a late fee at BB but it's not really that great of a deal. I'd rather see cheaper one days rentals, I mean how long do you really need to keep a movie for? When I heard no late fees I thought, "Wow, that's cool of them" then when I read the whole, charge you for the movie, restocking fee, store credit B.S. I was like :Q

This is a terrible idea for the customer who may not read the fine print.

i think this is very interesting, and it works very well for the likes of me who only rent a couple of times per month, yet sometimes forgot when exactly the due date is ("was i supposed to return it on sunday or was it monday before noon?").

But do they still charge $4 to rent it for the first night? That's the rip off. Only time I ever go to BlockBuster is when some incompetant fool gives me a gift card from there so I have to use it. I can go buy the movie for not much more than the price they charge just to rent it.

Exactly. I rent all my stuff from blockbuster and I've got no beefs whatsoever. I'd much rather walk into a store, pick up the movie that I'm in the mood to watch RIGHT NOW instead of paying a monthly fee and having to wait a couple of days to get the flick. I guess I'm just old fashioned. I don't have anything against Netflix but I'd much rather get the movies I want right away instead of waiting for them to show up in the mail.

It is a great business model for the situation they are in.

I used to go to Blockbuster. Rented a movie for 7 days (they had a special going on, 7 days for the regular price). Turned it in on the 6th day. Get a late fee notice in the mail. Never went back. Basically their late fee cost them a customer. There are probably a million other customers that they lost forever due to the late fee. Simply having no late fee would have kept many of those customers. Financially it is better to keep a long term customer than to attempt to steal $4 from the long time customer.

Of course, I'll never go back. I realized the grocery store had 5 day rentals for $0.49 (Super Saver). No reason I'll ever pay to go to Blockbuster, Netflix, or any other overpriced place.

So you'd rather pay 3-4 times as much to go buy a movie you may never watch again?

They're changing their business model to compete and yet even still you guys complain. Not everyone in the world has the internet and the capability to know how to order movies through netflix, this is wonderful for people who would rather shop in a B&M store right when they want to see a film instead of waiting. You're complaining about 9 days? Does it honestly take you 9 days to watch a film and return it a mile away to the store or whatever? Yes Viacom sucks, and yes they are shady as hell with their late fee assignment but this is a step in the right direction albeit a small one.

One thing i don't understand now with the late fees with BB, is why to rent a movie it cost like 3.75$ and if you are late one day you are charge a late of like 4.30$, i think it should be the same rate that was rented at.

edit: like i stated before i only go to BB when i got a free coupon, which i do right now, 1 free movie from BB for the next 6 months.

FVCK THAT!

Netflix all the way.

Sure you don't pay late fees for Netflix, but I never really understood the argument that Netflix is better in this aspect, since you're still paying the $17/mo. even if you hold those 3 movies for all 30 days, as opposed to having a quick turnaround time. Financially, you're still losing money the longer you hold those movies.

NETFLIX Sucks because I never could get the movies I want.

Well are they charging you the retail price of the movie, IE $20-$25 or what Blockbuster pays for it. $100 or so, due to licensing for rental.

Don't know where you buy your movies from but I never pay more than $8 - $9 for DVDs.

I too am one of those customers, I have not rented from BBV in about 4 years and have not rented regularly from them in 5 or 6.

Hollywood video is almost as bad but at least they give me 5 days. The started this MVP program where alot of new releases and old ones are .99 cents , up to 3 at a time. Thing is is your late you just lost about $15. I was late once and quickly quite the program when I realized that they are just setting up traps.

Check this out though... about 1.5 years ago I got hit with a $12 late fee...I avoided rented from them for over a year because of this fee. Yeah it was my fault and are all late videos but my point is the lost X amount of dollars from me over a $12 late fee.
That year I rented from a small M&P video shop , id say 2 videos a month at the very least.

You would be charged the replacement fee for the disc. BB pays the licensing fee to the distributor as part of the deal for having the title available for rental.

hows that different? they aren't charging what they paid in cash for it, they are charging for a retail disc from what i've read. not some profit sharing disc.

there is a blockbuster and hollywood video within 2 blocks from each other where i live. I dont like hollywood at all, i join when they first open and rented 1 movie and return it and they started calling me that i had not return it and kept calling and i said to them i did and stop calling, ever since then i never went back, i'm sure they cancel my membership by now, 4 years later.

IIRC, when titles become available for rental the stores pay a licensing fee for each copy they wish to rent out. The physical disc is no more expensive than the retail versions.

how much do they pay for each license?

I would figure that blockbusters pays for the license but probably gets the actual disk maybe for free?

example, like a convience store getting free coffee making machines as long that they purchase coffee from the same company that gave them the free coffee machine.

Honestly, I don't know anymore. Last I heard they were shifting to a deal that gives the distributors a percentage of what they take in instead of the flat fee model.

This makes more copys new releases available due to less up front cost for the big titles.
