But do they still charge $4 to rent it for the first night? That's the rip off. Only time I ever go to BlockBuster is when some incompetant fool gives me a gift card from there so I have to use it. I can go buy the movie for not much more than the price they charge just to rent it.

You are 9 days late. Now pay for your new DVD and if you bring it back you still have to pay a restocking fee.
FVCK THAT!
Netflix all the way.
Sure you don't pay late fees for Netflix, but I never really understood the argument that Netflix is better in this aspect, since you're still paying the $17/mo. even if you hold those 3 movies for all 30 days, as opposed to having a quick turnaround time. Financially, you're still losing money the longer you hold those movies.

Well are they charging you the retail price of the movie, IE $20-$25 or what Blockbuster pays for it. $100 or so, due to licensing for rental.

So you'd rather pay 3-4 times as much to go buy a movie you may never watch again?

It is a great business model for the situation they are in.
I used to go to Blockbuster. Rented a movie for 7 days (they had a special going on, 7 days for the regular price). Turned it in on the 6th day. Get a late fee notice in the mail. Never went back. Basically their late fee cost them a customer. There are probably a million other customers that they lost forever due to the late fee. Simply having no late fee would have kept many of those customers. Financially it is better to keep a long term customer than to attempt to steal $4 from the long time customer.
Of course, I'll never go back. I realized the grocery store had 5 day rentals for $0.49 (Super Saver). No reason I'll ever pay to go to Blockbuster, Netflix, or any other overpriced place.

You would be charged the replacement fee for the disc. BB pays the licensing fee to the distributor as part of the deal for having the title available for rental.

Hollywood video is almost as bad but at least they give me 5 days. The started this MVP program where alot of new releases and old ones are .99 cents , up to 3 at a time. Thing is is your late you just lost about $15. I was late once and quickly quite the program when I realized that they are just setting up traps.

hows that different? they aren't charging what they paid in cash for it, they are charging for a retail disc from what i've read. not some profit sharing disc.

IIRC, when titles become available for rental the stores pay a licensing fee for each copy they wish to rent out. The physical disc is no more expensive than the retail versions.
