No Name Memory Chips?

I recently bought a 512MB DIMM from Fry's where the only markings on the chips was "64Kx4 8". Do chip manufactures ever sell chips without their logo on them, or is it more likely that the original markings were removed by the DIMM maker? This DIMM was reported as being only 128MB, but that could have been due to my motherboard being old, and a 256MB DIMM worked normally with it.

Yes, actually most dimms do not even have the seller's or manufacturer's name on them except for a little sticker. Sometimes the sticker falls off thereby leaving the ram unlabeled. But the chip's themselves should have the name of their manufacturer. At any rate, try the dimm on a new motherboard and see if it's working OK. Otherwise RMA it.

The DIMM module may not have a sticker. But like Jiggz said the chips should have some markings.

BTW, do you know what chipset is used on your MB?

sounds like he has a bx based m/board in which case 256Mb is the max DIMM size that it will recognise!

Bacillus is right that one of the chipsets I tried was the 440BX. The other boards were the FIC VA-503+ and an an Intel based board with integrated video.

There were two stickers on the chips, one an elliptical picture of Earth (same as for the Fry's 256MB DIMM with Seitec chips) but nothing was printed on the chips except for "64Kx8 8".

One thing I noticed about the 512MB module was that there were four empty positions for resistors. My other modules, ranging from 64MB to 256MB, two to 16 chips, had no such empty positions.
