I didn't realize it until I came on here but I was experiencing the same problems with my 9700pro as many have rumored about. I had already filled out the paper work and was about to RMA my card to gigabyte for the same problems. I wasn't able to troubleshoot the 3.8's overheating though as I had to roll back the drivers so I wouldn't destroy my monitor.
I was running the 3.8's fine for about a week and then it just happened. I was in the middle of a multiplayer game and my computer just froze and then the monitor shut off. I could hear the game still playing in the background but I lost my video. I shut down and restarted and checked all my video settings to make sure everything was good, and I went back into a game. This time after about a minute the screen shut off, a loud ear peircing squeal started coming from my monitor and a yellow caution box came on the screen telling me to adjust my frequency. I had to power down to get the shrill to stop.
Not knowing what it was, and thinking I just fried my video card I rebooted and went into Bios. I took all my overclocked settings back to normal and went into windows. I changed my resolution to 800X600 and set the frequency to 85. I monitored my temps and ran Prime95 to make sure my normal clock settings were good. I let prime run for about 15 minutes with no problems. I then ran 3dmark2003... I almost made it all the way through before the computer locked up and I had to power down. I rebooted and ran aquamark and about half way through it locked up, the monitor flickered badly and went black, and the ear peircing shrill was back too. I powered down.
It didn't occur to me that it could have been the CAT 3.8's because it was running fine, but the thought did occur to me. So, I uninstalled and used driver cleaner to get rid of the 3.8. I reloaded 3.7's and have since overclocked everything back to my usual (small overclock only). I have benchmarked and ran as many tests as I can find and I am finally back to normal. I have yet to hear the aweful shrill from the monitor, had a lock up, or a black screen. I am not adding to the rumors but I had to post this because of the coincidence of what's going on.
On a side note I had emailed all this to gigabyte as well and they said it was one of two things, my monitor, or my video card. Well, I was worried about both to say the least, but I was sure the problems I was having were from the video card. If my monitor was going, the game wouldn't have been locking up in the first place, and I wouldn't have had to reboot so many times to fix it. I am pretty sure the problems I experienced were a direct result of the CAT 3.8 Drivers. This was a bad situation for me and almost resulted in me RMAing my card, hope this helps someone.
