No signal to monitor

My video signal just quit. Tried another monitor, same thing happens.
Computer seems to be starting up, makes a beep, lights on keyboard flash, hard drive sounds like is doing various tasks. Checked the big wires - all tight. Pulled out video card then put back in - no change.

Any advice on other things to try? I was just looking on craigslist for video cards but I'm not sure how I'll figure out how to know if a card will work will my old old box.

Don't want to do much more with the old box, just clean off the files I want to save. Maybe give it to my father as a photo viewing box. I was thinking of putting the hd's into enclosures and making them external drives (at least to get the data off) but I'm afraid I have a raid setup that might complicate that idea. It was originally raid 0 but got reconfigured a while back and not sure if it stayed that way.

So the question is - got any ideas of other things I might try - and if I post on craigslist what would I ask for (or look for) to figure out compatibility?

You tried a different monitor, did you also try a different VGA/DVI and power cables? How about unplugging everything except the bare minimum just enough to see it POST? Otherwise, it sounds like the only 'compatilbiliy' thing to check for when buying is if you have the right connector (interface) on the card. Yours is more likely AGP or even PCI, instead of the newer, current and popular PCI-E.

"AGP8X (AGP 3.0) is the next generation VGA interface specification that enables enhanced graphics performance with high bandwidth up to 2.12GB/s."

Taken from http://www.asus.com/999/html/events/mb/socket478/p4c800-d/overview.htm

It looks like you're gonna need either a PCI card, or an AGP card. I would personally go with AGP because it will supply better graphics acceleration to your setup.

You can always find out what your motherboard supports by just typing the motherboard model into google and following some links and looking at some specifications. Don't buy a PCI-E card.

I'm pretty sure your card has died. I would try buying a replacement as soon as possible and trying it out.

Your problem description does not specifically state that there is no video during POST. (If there is no video during POST then changing out the video card is the next step.)

Just buy an AGP card from Frys Electronics. They are priced as low as $30. If that's not the problem then just return it.

Be aware that there is more than one flavor of AGP card! The connector fingers are different. Refer to your mobo manual - if you don't have it, find it on line and download it.

Before going that route, I would try a different cable. Many LCD monitors have two connection options - digital or analog. Try the analog (VGA) if it has one.

There is no video at any time, before or after post.

I'm not worried about getting great performance out of a replacement card, just want enough to get into the computer, save all my wanted files to an external drive - and then maybe turn it into a digital photo view (and print) machine for my father's hobby.

Asus is kind enough to provide a manual that I can't copy and paste from so let me retype some details:

mobo has AGP PRO slot that supports AGP 8X (+0.8V) and 4X (+1.5V) but not 3.3V cards.
also has 32-bit PCI slots
