No sound and can not get back

this is actually an old post that I still haven't been able to resolve.

My father-in-law uninstalled Rhapsody on his computer, since then the sound stopped working. I checked everything...Updated the soundcard drivers. the sound card is SoundMax. Now here is the weird part. I went to windows help and used the Microsoft automatic "Fixit" application, About halfway through the sound went on. The problem is when the computer restarted it stopped working again. I have only been able to replicate the "fixit" fix one more time. Now that wont even work. The sound card is showing up in device manager but not under sound devices in the control panel ... Any incite would be great...

have also tried to do a windows repair install and also plugged in a USB headset that should of bypassed the sound card ..didn't work either. Other than a complete re-install....what can I do ..what couldo f caused this.

Remove the sound card in device manager and let windows re-detect it.

Sorry ..I didnt post everything Ive done....I did that a hundred times ..Its weird ..it actually re-installs fine and looks fine in device manager ..but in Sound devices in the control panel ..it is greyed out under sound output devices.

I think you'll see bangs on the sound device

Na just checked ......looked fine ....also I plugged in the USB headphones a while ago ...wouldn't that bypass the soundcard ..thats why I don't think its a soundcard issue...

Try running dxdiag from the command prompt and check the sound tab.

Ok ...now we get an error "error problem getting extra sound info result code = 0x80070057 (invaslid arguement(s)"

If you've already tried reinstalling the drivers, try reinstalling DirectX

ok the weirdest thing happened ..It didnt work I ot the same error in Dxdiag in the sound tab ...BUT I went to the next tab MUSIC for shits and giggles and got the same error ..Now for the Big BUT ...Under test using this port the soundmax card was second in the list I highlighted it and MUSIC started playing ...

tried it again just to hear music coming out of the speakers ..it started playing music then got the blue crash screen
