no sound from music cd's

I reinstalled Win/98 se for a friend and there is no sound from music cd's. The sound card is ok because there is sound coming from the speakers from other software. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.I also checked the volume control and it's not muted. It worked before I reinstalled windows. The audio cable is fine.

Open the Volume control and make sure the CD Volume is not muted.

Make sure the Audio cable is hooked up from your cd rom to your sound card.

when the cdplayer is on make should you press play and make sure the arrow does moving
sometimes you need to press the play bottom, but sometime it will start play once the cdplayer is load

Well it could be that the sound cable is not connected properly becasue software goes through the IDE cable and onto the harddrive, and the sounds are played off the hard drive and not the CD-Rom. Music CD is played through the sound cable which goes directly from the CD/DVD-Rom drive to the sound card! Without that it won't play audio cds!

I didn't mess with the hardware. I fdisked and formatted the hdd /s and installed win/98 se.

Make sure "Auto Insert" is checked, also it could be that it's sblive// and it needs to be configured/ie; what drives it detects/ and who plays who.........

If you're using an SB Live card, you need to open up the volume control panel, click OPTIONS, make sure Advanced Properties is selected, and then when the Advanced button pops up under Play Control, click it and make sure that Digital Output Only is NOT selected unless you're using a digital connection out to his speakers. (If he's using something like the Creative DTT2500)
