No sound from XFi in Vista

Hi,
I have a creative labs xfi xtrememusic sound card. It was working perfectly fine while I had vista x64 running on my machine. However, I had other issues and decided to try x86 out instead. My computer is running much better but I cannot get my sound to work. In device manager, it says the card is working correctly, I can navigate fine through the sound menus, but sound will not come out of the speakers. Further, I get an error saying "Failed to play test tone" when I click test in the sound properties and I get another error in WMP11. I am running the most recent drivers on creative's website, and have uninstalled and reinstalled a few times to try to get them to go. No dice.
Please help as I am getting really aggrivated at this thing.
Thanks for all your assistance!
Mike

Open the creative audio console, and switch between gaming mode and entertainment. I sometimes find in Vista much more often than XP that the XFi randomly decides to stop outputting sound.

Did you have card installed in XP and then upgraded OS to Vista or was that a "from-scratch" Vista installation?
Asking because I noticed things installed previously for XP would conflict after upgrade to Vista so it is safer to install Vista from scratch.
Do not use X-Fi CD under Vista, I think the original one is XP only and might cause troubles on Vista. If you tried to install anything
from that CD, remove it from the system. Else, is onboard sound turned off in BIOS?

Thanks for the response.
This was a fresh install (from scratch). I only used the drivers on creative's website. I did not use the CD. I do have onboard sound disabled in the bios.

I'd say completely uninstall the drivers, remove the card, and start over with it. It worked for me when I was having bugs.

Mike, you know your stuff. It is either wrong driver or for some reason it did not install properly.
If you have X-Fi xtreme Music this is your driver
Perhaps you have Xtreme Audio card not music then it is a different driver, dunno...
I did not use reg cleaner on Vista yet, but you might try this route.
Or just reinstall OS
(it is fun and great excuse not to do sports or socialize
Good Luck

Thanks for the responses. I will try taking the card out completely and see what happens. I was running vista x64 and the card worked fine, so this is pretty annoying here. I'll let you all know.
Thanks,
Mike

P.S. Ghouler: thanks for the compliment, but I just know enough to be dangerous.

Oh, and I tried the xtreme audio driver just in case, and it said it didn't find a supported device...

OK, uninstalled drivers and took out the xfi. Then put it in a different pci slot and same error comes up after installing the drivers again. Grrr!!!!

Hate to revive an old thread.

But I just went to a very frustrating time with the X-Fi Extreme Music. In my case, no Vista, just XP Pro + SP2 and all updates.

I used the driver CD which came with the card. It originally worked perfectly, then suddenly NO SOUND.

I then updated the driver and the MediaSource to the latest on the CT site. Everything showed as working except it was not owrking. NO SOUND. Can it be a hardware problem?

So for the last few days this is what I did:

1. Remove the card.
2. remove drivers with add/remove windows program.
3. Use Driver Cleaner Pro in windows safe mode to remove ALL Creative Tech drivers.
4. Reinstall latest drivers and MEDIASOURCE.

Result: Everything showed in Device Manager as working, enabled and etc...

BUT NO SOUND.

I have never had any problem like this before.

Any idea?
