My system: Win98se, Abit KT7-RAID mobo (RAID not used), Duron 650, ATI 98 Xpert video card, memorex cd-rom, 128 mb ram. used to be Yamaha ISA sound card (several years old) and worked. After reinstall win98, no sound. Tried another sound card Ensoniq PCI, still no sound. Reintalled Win98 again, no sound. Reinstalled sound card driver, no sound. In all cases the Device manager lists the sound card and shows no conflicts and in proper working order. Tried using Windows trouble shooting. Please help.

BTW I also tried Win2k no sound.

two obvious things which you probably have already looked at.
Are the speakers and their cables good?
Make sure no windows volume controls are all the way down or checkmarked as being muted.

It sure sounds like a speaker problem to me. Have you tried other speakers? Plug some headphones in to the speaker jack and see if you hear sound. Since you've used two cards and two operating systems, it definitely seems to be hardware related. The only other thing I would check is the bios/setup of the pc and make sure any on-board sound is disabled.

will the sounds appear to play, just no sound coming out? Try playing a song and then go to volume controls, make sure volume is up. In volume control the little bars should move in concordance w/ the sound supposedly being played. Dunno if this helps or not

Does Windows detect your sound card if you remove it, boot, shut down. Re-install sound card and re-boot?

Have you checked the "multimedia" icon in control panel?
Make sure the playback is set for the correct device.
Maybe if you start in "safe mode", remove any sound cards it lists,
reboot normally and install the drivers again?

Like 4824guy said, check your volume control and make sure the Mute boxes are unchecked.

Thanks for all your advice. I did tried everthing you mentioned here.
1. I tried different sound card, ISA and PCI.
2. I tried speakers and headphone.
3. I tried removing the driver. When Win booted up it detected the sound card. I installed the driver and Device Manager showed it works proplerly.
4. I check vol. control, I made sure I plugged in in the right place.
5. ...

But NO SOUND.
