No sound when captured with AIW Radeon

Hi. Just wonder if anyone has sucessfully captured video using the ATI Radeon AIW. I connected as described in the manual, video in and sound in to the big purple dongle then connected to the AIW card. Select composite signal from ATI TV then capture the video. Video playback is fine but no sound. ATI FAQ website suggested to download the latest drivers. Did that and still have the same problem. If I connect the sound cable directly to my soundcard in jack then everything works fine. Is this a design flawed? Email to tech.support was confirmed but haven't received any support from ATI. It has been one week already. Thanks in advance for any help you can give. My OS is W2K.

Do those cards still have internal soundcard pass-throughs? I don't recall but if it does then it will need to be connected to the soundcard. I know my old AIW-Pro had them and they HAD to be connected to capture anything with sound. Just having the tv-out dongle connected into the soundcard will not do the trick. Hope this helps.

Ummm...Yea.

You still need to hook the AIW to your soundcard either internally, or externally(prefered method). If you look in your manual, you'll see there is an audio line-out connector on the Multi-gang A/V-out connector. Just hook that into the line-in of your soundcard. Internally there is a connector on the card that you hook to the internal connector on your soundcard. IIRC there is an audio-input you can hook the internal audio cable from your CD Rom drive into on the Radeon, and then the Radeon to your soundcard so that you only use one internal sound connector for your CD Rom and Radeon cards, the pins are different however, and that cable is not included, so the external connection is the prefered method.

Then you'll have sound. Good luck.

Dear rbv5. I think there is a misleading instruction on the installation. This is what I see in the manual as well as ATI has on their website.

http://www.ati.com/support/connectors/radeonaiw/connectradeonaiwvideoinput.html

If I connect the cable as instructed on the webpage above, I have no sound whatsoever. If I plug the sound out from my camcorder directly to line-in jack of my sound card then it works fine. ATI recommends to download the new driver to fix the problem but I am still experiencing the same problem. I tried several times by re-formating the drive and install a fresh driver from ATI and nothing helped. ATI technical support by email does not exist as they haven't reply to my email since last Tuesday, about 10 days ago. Thanks for your input.

Obelix: did you understand what rbV5 said? (no mean tone intended) he was pointing out how to set up the AIW inside the case. the video card needs to connect the sound card in order for sound capture to work. do you know if that is connected?

the instructions arent misleading, they just assume that you have the video card connected to the sound card as rbV5 described.

Sorry, I should have just given you links. You need to use one of these methods to connect the Radeon to your soundcard for audio capture:
Internally or Externally (note that you were basically doing it with this method by directly connecting the composite(RCA) audio-out of your VCR rather than into the purple dongle audio connectors, which is why that method worked for you)

So, no design flaw, just easy to overlook during installation as its not exactly clearly stated.

even then the stupid sound properties won't automatically select the Line-in as the record preference. so make sure you check that one out also.
