I am a novice asking advice after having someone else do the actual work, so I may not be able to give enough details for advice, but here goes.

Bought new case and had someone remove a board known good from another and place in new case.

He added a new drive and installed WinXP. Said it booted and worked fine but was still finetuning.

Finished and told me to pick it up, but that he did not get it finished booting the last time because his test monitor died.

I connected it and got through all the usual stuff of drive detection, sys recognition, etc and well into WinXP when the message "no display" appeared and then the compter immediately began rebooting. It just continued the same process after making sure all connections were good and changing cards and monitors. Just continuously reboots automatically and give the same message. I now realize his test monitor did not die, he just had the same thing happen to him.

Any idea what might be happening and any suggestions very welcome.

Thanks in advance

This could be one of many things, from a virus to heat to bad ram.

The board known good, is EVERYTHING from that other machine? The RAM, CPU, all cards, etc, except the new drive? He installed XP - do you know if he connected to the internet to update it?

Please describe or link the case, and everything you know about the original computer (brand(s)/cards installed/etc...) Please include any information you have on the old and new power supplies.

My first inclination would be to remove/reseat everything but the CPU - all the cards, the RAM and all the connections. It might be something's a tad loose and makes the machine freak out once it gets a little warm.

I will try the things you said, but cannot tell you what the specific components exchanged were. I do not think it is related to heat or the cpu because no matter how many or few times I let it go through rebooting it always hangs at exactly the same place.

Thanks

It sounds yo me as, the CPU is not mounted correctly like Rivan said,

make sure all the fans are connected and running.

WinXP starts to boot but never finishes. What happens when you boot in safe mode or last known good? Hit F8 shortly before XP's splash screen comes up and you'll get a list of choices - pick last known good first and give it a shot.

When a CPU isn't mounted correctly the machine won't even boot in the experience that I have had, even if it is a hair off...

I've had a machine where I pulled up on the heatsink to make sure it was on alright and it pulled on the processor because the thermal grease glued it to the sink. After that the computer wouldn't even post. Powered up and got the fans going but won't go further than that.

Again that is just from what I have experienced...

Sorry I have not responded .. was gone till now. It does the same thing in safe mode, still stopping at the same place. Have not tried last known goof yet, but will.

Finally got to see the error message and it says the hard drive is corrupted and shuts down windows, so I guess that is where I go next.

I got it up and running. He had mistakenly set two hard drives as the "master" and it was rying to boot from the wrong one.

Thanks for all the help!
