No video games found in search of Virginia Tech killer?s dorm

Blacksburg (VA) - Police and news media are still trying to figure out what caused Virginia Tech student Cho Seung-Hui to kill himself along with 32 classmates and teachers, but so far violent video games don?t appear to be a factor. In a search warrant performed on the same night as the April 16th killings, police found chains, tools, computers and compact discs, but no games. Almost immediately after the shootings, Dr. Phil McGraw and Jack Thompson appeared on major news networks and tried to link Seung-Hui?s shootings to violent video game play.

Virginia State Police searched Seung-Hui?s room at around 9:06 PM on April 16th and recovered 16 pieces of evidence. Most of the items were fairly average including combination locks, notepads and documents, but police also grabbed the killer?s Compaq computer, two cases of compact disks and an 80 GB hard drive. CNN has obtained a copy of the search warrant and the list of items collected. You can read that document here .

You can see from the list that no video game boxes, joysticks, controller pads or software were seized. There were also no game consoles in the dorm room, indeed Seung-Hui?s roommate has told police and reporters that he?s never saw the killer play any video games. Of course, the police could still find games on the hard drives or compact discs, but, at this point, it doesn?t appear that video games of any kind played any factor in Seung-Hui?s rampage.

After the shootings, noted television psychologist Dr. Phil McGraw appeared on CNN?s Larry King show and said that violent video games were ?programming? kids. ?You cannot tell me, common sense tells you that if these kids are playing video games, where they're on a mass killing spree in a video game, it's glamorized on the big screen, it's become part of the fiber of our society,? said McGraw. You can read the entire transcript of Dr. Phil?s comments here .

Attorney and anti-violent game activist Jack Thompson also went on a media offensive by giving interviews to major networks like Fox News and MSNBC. In those interviews he linked school shootings with violent video games and added that they help the killers simulate and plan out the shootings.

I am still waiting for the evidence that homosexuals and abortion were the cause of what happened. Stand by.

Even without evidence, they'll still claim video games are to blame.

I also like how they keep blaming CS still even when its so out of date now, surely there are several other games with considerably larger internet audiences at this point? I mean CS isn't even the most up to date version of its own game, CS:S is

Nobody takes the time to get good at CS (which is a hard game) only to go to prison for killing somebody in real life. It's just tsoo much time wasted.

As much as I hope I never know anyone who performs a mass killing, if I do I'm gonna tell the press that he listened to Christian Rock all the time and was obcessed with The View and Oprah. Maybe that'll shut up some people.

That's a shame. Now politicians won't be able to turn "violent video games" into a campaign issue.

I hate the media its counter productive to our society... Jumping to conclusions, basically declaring people guilty before the verdict is out (duke univ. students), etc. Thank god Cho didnt play any video games because then for the next 2 months all we would hear is about evil video games and violence on TV and movies made him do it.

If anyone is to blame for giving Cho the idea to do this blame the media and its exploitation of Colombine for viewing ratings.

yeah, I was thinking ya know if I was gonna go out in a blaze of glory I'd take stuff from the people I hates most and make it look like they influenced be to do it and such so they got lampooned in the media. Like, I don't like WoW, so I buy a bunch of WoW cr@p before I kill a bunch of people and then Blizzard gets all kinds of sh|t when it looks like a crazed WoW player killed a bunch of people. OF course the problem is that there really aren't anyone I can think of that I would wish that upon, but then against thats why I am a sane person and DON'T go on killing rampages, so if i were cr@zy, I would probably due it. Just think, whatever movie/game/song you most hated that includes violence, if you make it look like you loved it and then kill a bunch of people the producers of said movie/game/song are gonna get all kinds of sh|t in the media, and maybe get their asses sued.

They still have movies to go after, but someone with Hollywood paying for the Democrat party I don't think we'll see that happen.
Although the right can still do it.

You have to admit the 'Oldboy' images do make you wonder about this kid and what drove him over the edge. Although according to a review he totally missed the point of "Oldboy" which was that revenge is empty.

Maybe he watched too much TV and was brainwashed into an apathetic stupor by the Media???

I think Video games are better for you than what they put on TV.
