Most Dells now include a "Windows" disc and a "Drivers and Applications" disc, and if you used the Windows disc you wouldn't have to use a CDKEY at all. At least that's what came with my last three Dells (2 XPS M1330's and a Vostro 1320).

Units bought through the outlet do not have windows disks included with them for some reason.

some reason is to prevent resale. An OEM key specifically forbids transferring said license to another person, or another computer. Only retail purchased ones are transferable to another computer you own (i am not sure about another person though... i think the law allows both to be resold, but MS is trying to convince people that isn't the case so that they do not do it)

I'm quite sure no one here buys as many systems from Dell's Outlet as I do. The odds of not receiving the Windows install disk is extremely low.

5/5 for me. Had to return a laptop two times for replacements. No disks....

Not sure why it would be different for laptops. I mainly buy desktops and workstations, and they almost always come with the Windows install disks. The two Latitudes I purchased most recently came with the disks.

It depends on what the original purchaser specified. The OS media is a no charge option. Many corporate buyers don't want/need hundreds of Windows disks so they order their systems without the disks. If something happens later and they don't accept as many machines as they ordered, the surplus goes into the Outlet. The result is that a "recently ordered as new" machine (which usually means a corporate cancellation) less likely to come with the disks than one that is "refurbished".

In any case, any Dell owner can get one replacement set of disks -- the OS and the Resource CD -- at any time.

you don't have to enter the key on some oem machine,s because the bios has an imprint in it saying that its an OEM system that doesnt require activation .

That is how they ghost thousands of machines and put them on shelves without entering individual keys in.

THey key on the sticker may or may not work, but the bios thing is true. That is how people pirate vista/7 also. The oem imprint and an oem copy for that oem is what they need (might even work with any oem copy)

I am not encouraging piracy, do not ban me mods please. But that is why you dont have to enter keys when you use the dell OS disk.

if you google for it, there's some xp key changer that will read off your current serial key.
assuming that you are indeed keeping everything legal, i'd recommend this route.
just copy it down and re use it during install.

thanks, but:
1. i already found my key
2. it is probably illegal in the usa to use.
3. I am using vista, not XP.
