But really, a librarian making over $212k? I mean that's a lot for a city worker.

Probably not considering the cost of living in San Jose. Then you'd have to consider that librarian is probably highly educated and in charge of all libraries. All stories like this are designed with one purpose in mind - to rabble the public by the use of jealousy.

I just want to know why they pay their employees so much when they don't have money to fix roads or even build any infrastructure there.

You a prick like this in real life?

Consider, for a moment, what would happen if they lowered their salaries and the employees resigned/retired/departed. Who would be left to run the government? You?

I doubt they are irreplaceable. And yes, I would.

Oh, I'm sure that they're replaceable. I just doubt that many intelligent people would work for the government for a lower salary than they can obtain privately.

The "intelligent" people who ran the cities into massive debt you mean, right?

Those would be the elected ones, the ones YOU and the rest of your area put in office.

welcome to the era of jealousy and envy. trickle up poverty will make it plenty worse.

No, welcome to the era of guaranteed income growth for state employees, regardless of the state of the economy.

That's the sad part of this country. The only difference between San Jose and Bumfuck South Dakota (where I live) is that people are willing to pay outrageious amounts to live there. Market value is only what people are willing to pay. This leads me to believe that everyone in California are morons.

Well, that and they have great weather, an ocean, mountains...

People's republic of Kahlifornia, go figure.

South Dakota isn't anywhere near a coast. You might find people in cali to be morons, but I'd also have to assume you don't care about living on a coast. I live in Cali, and the beach makes ANY price worth it. You couldn't pay me $200k a year to live in South Dakota, where I would pay the same $200k to live here. California is worth it, and then some. South Dakota has HORRIBLE weather, Cali has the best overall weather anywhere in the US outside of Hawaii. The houses cost what they do here, because they're worth it. S.D. it snows and is shitty as hell, of course nobody wants to pay anything to live there.

Cost of living = quality of living. There are places where this isn't true, NY comes to mind. But Cali is worth every penny. I'm sure I could find somewhere in Kentucky where I could buy a huge house for $30k, but to live in Kentucky would void the money saved in my mind. If you to live in a shithole like South Dakota, then you obviously don't have a very high quality of living expectation.

Bitter?? I live in California, the PERFECT place to live. I love it so much here I don't even take vacations out of state. There's no reason for me to leave Cali, ever. If you live in Cali and are bitter, something is definitely wrong with you.

I also didn't say that the intelligent folks were the ones controlling the budget. Most of the people controlling the budget are the elected officials, not the people that are actually doing the work. And for what it's worth, I've worked for elected officials that are intelligent - regardless of the opinion of some of their constituents. That's not speaking for most - or even many - elected officials; only those by which I have been employed.

The thing I find more striking than the first page of results is the next 50 pages. 1,000 people into the list and you finally drop below $140,000.

Edit: With about 17,500 people on the city payroll, and about 939,000 population, that's one city employee for every ~53 people. Is that typical?

Granted, nearly everybody making over $300k is in the health profession.

I go to the University of Utah and I know a lot of professors that make in the $80-$100k range that are TERRIBLE teachers and spend half their time bitching and moaning about how they don't get paid enough to live up on the hill by campus.

That's bullcrap, $80k in Salt Lake city is extremely well off. Over 100k in SLC and you're in the top 2%.

That's insane. I believe many med school professors practice part-time as well.

Based on what source? They are well above even the 90th percentile on inflated physician recruitment search salary surveys. Maybe the plastic surgeons, dermatologists, and possibly the otolaryngologists could pull close to that with a VERY successful 100% cosmetic practice, but, having a very good idea of both physician compensation and compensation at other med schools, I find these numbers insane.

Most med school professors practice full time (like myself) or at least half time and do research.

Clearly you know nothing of librarians. When comparing education librarians are among the most poorly paid group of people in the country. Ex: My starting pay (with my masters) is 36k (a bit below average). If I stay at this same job my pay would be maybe 20% more in ten years. In fact, I do not think there is a single librarian in this entire state that makes over 100k, much less 200k.
Good Lord, it's a freaking LIBRARIAN job, for gosh sakes. How the hell much is that worth? It's not like you had to go to pre-librarian school, then librarian school, then intern for a couple of years before you became a librarian.
Not knocking the job, but come on. Some jobs are worth more than others. Librarian isn't one of them.

Kentucky who cashed out of California real estate several years ago and bought 60 acres of beautiful country.
