<< Reinstalling the king of afghanistan, with a UN peaceforce, which could be composed mostly of muslim countries, and pakistani support, then there could be a good possibility that the village leaders would support it.

Totaly agree with you there. I think that is the only way to solve this if we want to prevent the west from getting another kick in the face 20 years from now. To bad the king is about 82 years old

Though Chomsky's information is correct AFAIK, I think the sentiment of his article is horrible. Noam is not stupid, but the impression you get from reading it is "The U.S. deserved this, including innocent citizens". Obviously he doesn't believe this, but his section on "the guns are pointed in the other direction now" doesn't clarify that it's the U.S government who's guilty (not the people so much), and the attacks are still very much wrong.

He's a longtime criticizer of American foreign policy, and rightly so for the most part.

"But there's plenty of ways to get rid of the taliban."

Enlighten me. How do you get rid of a goverment without the use of military actions when that goverment will use military actions to stay in power?

More Sanctions? no

Arm the local militia and have them remove them, like we did to help remove Russia? no

Now that I think about it, I dont see a "moderate Islamic" group taking up arms agaist thier brothers. It would have to be a militant group.

Help, this ship is sinking... . . . . . .

Kill off their leadership with special forces is an excellent way, their soldiers don't really care too many about the taliban either, they're just fighting for whomever gives the country the best chances, and apparently, the taliban is currently doing that.

most of those soldiers would prefer to be farmers, but they can't do that, because there's mines everywhere. so it's either starve or be a soldier.

<< Noam Chomsky is a really smart guy that knows what he is talking about. >>

lol! Well, he is a really smart guy, and he does know what he's talking about, whether he is accurate or deliberately skews everything through his far-left BIZARRO world is another matter.

Bin Laden is a "really smart guy that knows what he is talking about", too.

Howdy,
Chomsky does good research and cites sources from many different areas, which is great as it allows one to read this article and draw our own conclusions.

However, I usually disagree with Chomsky. He's given to cry wolf about overwhelming government or commercial conspiracies, which ignore the basics of reality.

"Kill off their leadership with special forces is an excellent way"

That would work, but the only difference between this and regular troops is that only the action is secret, the outcome of both will be very public. Plus I think it would take a fairly large special force to remove the taliban, I dont think the leaders are just sitting with thier clerics in a cave waiting. Im sure they have a fairly strong force with them. A failed special operation would be disastrous as word spread of the Talibans defeat of the US attack. I also think your underestimating the drive of the Afganistan farmer/fighter. If anything, the supporters of the Taliban in Pakistan (who are not controlled by the Taliban) are a good example. I think they will fight a bit more than you believe.

We will still have large uprisings in Pakistan, Indonesia and Iran. Anti-US fundmentalist groups in these countries are getting stronger everyday. And more terrorist threats will become reality. This is what I want to avoid, but how is it done?

"Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!"

kenazo: I believe pcmodem's signature is a quote from the classic movie "Animal House". John Belushi played the character (Bluto) who exclaimed it.

Noam Chompsky critical of US Government? (laugh) I can't remember when he wasn't critical of the US Govt.
