premium boxing on fans now?

*face palm*

Can i seriously question where our industry is going?
And can i ask why they cant use just plan regular boxing and shelf off the savings to us consumers in a cheaper price?

Those look edible. Licorice core with chocolate crust.

Because they want to uphold their premium brand image, and they want it to shine through in everything they do. Cutting costs with cheaper packaging and lowering pricing would do nothing to increase their profits... quite the opposite, it would make their brand less consistent and less recognizable as a premium brand which would probably lower their sales volume

I replaced my PS3 with a high-end Oppo blu-ray player and when I opened the box on the Oppo, there was no doubt I was opening something that was high quality. The packaging and protection they used was definitely what would be called premium with satin pouches and white gloves. I paid a lot for that Oppo and I honestly can not tell you if the picture or sound is any better than my old PS3, but I sure do think it is because everything about Oppo from their service to their products to their reviews to even their packaging has exuded quality and a premium brand image.

Same with Noctua. I don't have a problem paying for something if I think it is the best and I will likely check into these new Noctua fans the next time I need some for a project. If I end up paying an extra 2 or 3 bucks for them because of high end packaging, well I have a ton of high end boxes on the shelves behind me, guess I could add these in as well.

Yes, please, start questioning. Bring in the witnesses. And pretty boxes of evidence.

While some have used the 'premium brand' rationale, I find that line of rationalization, just a little creepy in the geeky enthusiast market where performance was valued most and packaging was regarded, at best, with disdain.

With the BOM cost of a 'premium' $30.00+ Noctura hitting maybe $3.00, (1.50 spent on packaging), it seems to me to be a 'premium' reaming. Oh, I get it, it's Apple-Syndrome - get reamed in exclusive style. ;-)

What's funny is that Noctura were renown for pricey fugly products that worked well. Now they're pushing pretty fans in pretty boxes (gift enclosures?) with fugly names.

So...does this mean, in the end, the fashionistas inherit the enthusiast world too?

Depends on the price of cardboard and one-shot graphics-design efforts. I'm more interested in the performance specs, so a few cents -- even a dollar -- is not all that important.

On the other hand, a company could spend X dollars per unit on packaging to reap an X+Y additional unit revenue and Y unit profit. In the end, the buyer doesn't care about the packaging, which he/she may throw away. But if the decision to buy at Price P is influenced by cardboard and cellophane, well . . . . it means that P is likely more than the product warrants for performance and cardboard alone.

Interesting for the future as I like Noctuas.

They are well built.

Still surprised they don't make a 200mm range fan.

Nice to see PWMs in there also.

For some reason, I'm more excited about these fans than I was when they announced the NH-D15. I plan on replacing all of my fans in my case with the new NF-A14 PPC 3000RPM Fan. I can't wait to see some reviews on the 3000rpm and 2000rpm models.

They are making a 200mm fan. Noctua said that they plan on releasing it this year.

I personally like the color scheme of Noctua's fans since it's what makes them unique and distinguishable from all the other fans out there. When I first started using Noctua fans, I could not stand the color scheme but over time, it kind of grew on me and it doesn't bother me that much now.

I just realized that the boxing on this noctuna fan is GREATER then my 1TB Samsung EVO SSD.

lolol...

Im sorry, i just cant seem to get over that premium boxing...

Noiseblocker makes a better fan in regards to performance / noise.
They are a tad bit more expensive, but its a greater fan without the premium boxing.
And they also look very bling.
