noisy antec power supply

One of the reasons I bought Antec's Sonata I case is because it was supposed to be quiet. After a while the included Antec power supply began to alternate between a normal state and a very noisy one. I am running FreeBSD 5.4 on a Gigabyte motherboard. Anyone have any ideas on what I can do besides changing the power supply?

Scroll down this page, Read the thread, "I've had it with Antec". Read it in total.
Then PM AntecCSR.

Best I got,

RMA time, or see if you can use the motherboards bios to regulate the speed of the power supply fan. Does the one included with the sonata come with the three pin motherboard header?

I'd also RMA the Antec PSU if it's still in warranty (hope you kept the invoice on your case/PSU). Look around inside the PSU case (thru the slots and holes) to see if any of the caps are leaking (see http://www.badcaps.com for pix of what cap leakage looks like). If you have leaking cap(s) it shouldn't matter whether the warranty is up or not as that is a known problem with some Antecs recently. Or perhaps it's just the simplest explanation - the fan bearing has gone bad. Those are easy enough to replace - just get one of the same size and nearly the same current or power rating (so the thermal controller will work properly) and pop it in, Just be careful what you touch while you're in there.

My Antec PSU began to make a lot more noise before it ultimately failed. I believe the fans were working at full power pretty much 100% of the time trying to keep up with the heat. I blamed it on the hotter weather at the time (oops).

Don't risk the damage, replace it IMO.

QFT

When the caps start to fail, the VRMs, toroidal coils and diodes get hot. The thermal control warms up and the fan ramps up.

Have you smelled anything like ammonia yet or a fart smell.

Sounds like you should RMA it.

http://www.antec.com/us/supportRMA.html

Most likely they'll replace it with a TP2-380, which is ATX12V v2.0 which could be an issue with older boards. I suggest letting them know (if you know) whether or not your motherboard is ATX1.3 or ATX12v 2.0 or later.

The only reason it's ramping up is because the PSU sensor has hit 40C or higher. Once it gets below that point it slows back down. Not sure if you have any new hardware, change in weather/location or possibly an extremely dusty system, but those are the only non-bad PSU things I can think of that might cause this. Still I'd say RMA it, the point is a quiet system.

The point is, stable clean PSU output for the JEDEC recommended 5 years for a desktop SMPS.

The point is, Antec had thermal controllers installed that sought silence over unit service life.
Considering the PSU's pcb is populated with the lowest tier capacitors, this was a big mistake.
This is common knowledge within repair tech forums.

Dirty system or hot ambients are real reasons for shut down but at this point in time, those offerings don't flote.

The Antec that I am using is dead silent. Had it over 3 years now.

Did you hook up the PSU fan speed monitor to the motherboard? I have heard that in some cases this causes the fan to run at a much faster speed than normal. Try disconnecting it if you hooked it up.

And I'm sure there are plenty of Deer, and Powmax PSUs running well after three years also, maybe you'd like to try one of those for your next unit?

So I ask you again GalvanizedYankee who died and left you in charge?:;
Since when is a profile a mandatory?
You accusing me of stirring up crap. But your proactive stance against anything Antec alsostirs up crap. Regardless if you happen to be right or wrong - you catch more flies with venigar than with honey.
Hmm that didn`t sound right.
You can`t have it both ways.
I am entitled to an opinion that is favorable to Antec for that matter anything else that I like that you possibly don`t like.
In the end if my opinion bothers you then you have an alternative which is to just not read my opinion.
