Noisy Hard drive? Quantum Fireball Plus LM

I have a Quantum Fireball Plus LM (15 GB) enclosed in a Silent Drive and it is still quite noisy!! It rumbles a lot, is there anything I can do about this or is this hard drive just a rumbler?

Yeah, they sure do make a lot of noise when moving the heads...You'll get used to it.

I have the same drive, but a 20gig.
Yes, it does chatter a bit during some serious access.

I agree, you do get used to it after awhile.

Here's a solution: Install some real loud 120mm fans. That should silence it!

Yeah my IBM 18GXP rumbles a bit too. I'd might buy a enclosure for it. A bit conserned about the heat though

Just wondering when you installed your Silent drive did you remove the feet on the HD? I've notice alot of ppl have been installing these drives incorrectly and the plates aren't even touching the drive.
Honestly i wouldn't use a silentdrive on any newer 7200 HD, it shortens the life of your HD pretty significantly, even with active cooling over the heatplates, the heatplates might be cold but its gonna be alot hotter inside. With 80mm fan blowing over em its temp is fine on the outside that is, without it its some 30f over ambient which i don't feel safe at all, inside id expect it too be double that. And my HD ran ice cold without it(silentdrive) and its one of the earlier 7200 drives that aren't as powerful as todays and runs much cooler then any 7200 drive i've had my hands on. Of course we are going beyond the drives specifications, which is 5400 drive thats under 5 watts of dispating heat, not all 5400 drives fit that spec.

Yea I have a pair of Fireball LM 15.3's that and my Creative 52x max make for some fun noises. Makes me wonder why I got an FOP32 rather than a 38 with all the noises I have already. When I first got everything going I thought all the noise was wicked pissa but now its just too much.

Speaking of noise ever have a high speed lil'486 fan go bad. Whooley dooley what a racket! I actualy looked outside thinking it was a snowblower nearby making the dull vibrating roar. I almost died when I figured out it was the PC. Laughed pretty hard when I found out a 4$ part was the culprit.

HUH! Thats weird, my quantum lm 20gig doesn't make much noise, sure it makes more noise then my fugistu 8.4gig, put it sure makes alot less noise then my 15gig seatgate hard drive.

Maybe I'm just used to it I don't know.

I got the same drive and same noise... just adapt.. or get an IBM drive
