Apparently these have been selling for $399 at costco in Calif., after reading some reviews.

kudos to those who bought theirs for $386 from dell and liked them. mine had uncorrectable bad convergence on corners and skewy text. so i called nokia up and they sent me a replacement, same problem. even the tech (they're not really nokia people, but a 3rd party company called trillium industries that does contract monitor support for nokia) admitted those being from a bad patch. so if you're really picky on visual quality my advice is stay away from nokia and stick with sony.

btw these nokias aren't as bright as their sony counter parts. you can get a sony 19" cpd-g400 that does 1600x1200 nicely for much less and give your eyes less strain.

edit: i used the utility called ntest.exe that came with the monitor to test the convergence. it showed seperate red and blue lines where supposely only purple lines should be shown.

Pardon me saying this, but bullshit! I went through 5 Sony G420's (too many factory defects) before I got this monitor from Dell and I would have to say that this monitor is almost identicle to the Sony's. Actually, the specs are better on this Nokia FD Trinitron (Flat screen for all of those who want to know). I can run higher refresh rates on the Nokia. I'm currently running 1600 x 1200 at 85 hz and can run 100 hz at 1280 x 1024. Try that with a Sony G series. The only thing that I liked better on the Sony was that it had an extra monitor input and a flashier case. Otherwise, if you get a good monitor (one that's not a factory defect or damaged in shipping. Which can happen with any monitor as I'm finding out), you will not be able to tell the difference between this monitor and the much more expensive Sony.

Oh... Heh. Forgot to mention. This thing is huge. People wanting this for a LAN party need not apply.

Bah, you're a girly man if you can't carry this to a LAN party. I lift 21" monitors all the time at work, you don't hear me complaining.

Is Ohio that big, that you need to know where? If you plan to pick up, the rep is gonna give you the address anyways. I just wish I have the cash to buy this monitor...

If you pick up locally, you will probably have to pay sales tax. You would also need a truck or at least a SUV. The box for this monitor is BIG and the shipping weight is a heavy 90lbs+ The states $64 S&H is very reasonable for this item

I am extremely picky about monitor quality (since that's the only part of a computer system that I look at most of the day), so I guess it's Sony for me. We have a Sony CPD-G400 and the equivalent Compaq P900 from the CDW deal, and need to a dual-monitor setup on one of the computers...however, the CDW deal is over and I have not seen the G400 for less than about $380 shipped. Where have you seen the Sony monitor for "much less" than this Nokia?

I got all excited reading about saving $64 by picking it up...now I'm discouraged! Too bad, want to replace my 19" Samsung900NF.

umm a golden member?

what's the difference between nokia 445pro and sony cpd-g420? simple, the sony is better. why? cause they both do 1600x1200 @ 85hz, both have maximum at 1800x1440, but 445pro is 21" while cpd-g420 is 19". now let's do this thing again with a 21" sony cpd-g520, 1880x1440 @ 85hz, maximum 2048x1536 @ 75hz, there you go, cut the crap.

as for the brightness, as a software tester i have to look at different screens for 8 hours at work plus another 3-4 hours at home. at work they have sony monitors, dell monitors, compaq monitors, gateway monitors, all use trinitron tubes, at home i have the nokia and a sony. i know how they look like in all resolutions, contrast, brightness, in day time, in night time, with lights on, with lights off, so yeah, i can tell you that sony has the best contrast/brightness and is the most comfortable to look at.

Is it just me or is any one else annoyed at a 21" monitor that has 19.6 viewable? I know I know, but jeez, nearly an inch and a half?

Are you kidding? Although this is a larger monitor, the Samsung 900NF is a world-class monitor. Having said this, my 900NF does require RMA soon.
Personally, I think the tradeoff between 19" and 21" CRT favors the 19" CRT.

For only two more inches of diagonal area, you also have to deal with a bigger package and about 35 extra pounds. Unless you absolutely need 21" (i.e. professional CAD work), I think 19" is better.

In two to three years, we'll all realize how silly a 21" CRT is, and be buying 18" to 20" LCDs instead.

I picked this monitor up at Costco about a month ago.
I've been very happy with this monitor (this is about my 8th monitor I've used and by far the nicest ever).

I noticed that my Costco no longer sells them (must have worked through the stock).

I'm very happy that I was in the market when these came out on sale!

After all the discussion, I'm glad I ordered it. I AM a stickler for image quality and sent back 2 Iiyamas till I got the "good one" which is by far the nicest monitor I've ever used (19" AG VM450Pro) and continue to use. Maybe I'll get lucky and get a good one 1st off. The specs look real good as does the small footprint case (for a 21"). Hopefully I'll get it before the new year. I'm also waiting for a NEC LCD 17 on dealer demo pricing that I'm pretty anxious about.......! But that's for a different application (music station) and I won't need to game on it. This one should be just about right for all purpose - 'slong as it's a good unit. Interesting discussion.

Thx

A couple of notes:
The 445Pro does 2048x1536 also, but at 60Hz.
And comfortable viewing of a monitor is very subjective. What one person finds comfortable, may give someone else headaches...

I got in on the Dell deal a while back too and have been quite happy with the monitor. I recall from that thread though that there was some coincidence between slight corner distortion/fuzziness and a series of Serial numbers while another series of numbers was fine. The analysis was less than scientific as the data was taken from forum-goers who posted their serial numbers and their experiences with the monitor. Unfortunately, I don't have the results of the serial number comparison handy...maybe it's archived somewhere?

There is also a Nokia test/configuration utility you can download at:

Nokia Utility

It's a BIG monitor and weighs about 75 lbs but it's got a great picture, especially nice for games. It supports a super-high refresh rate which is easy on the eyes: I normally run 1024x768x32 at 144mhz!

Edit: Made the URL into a real link.

Odd... I can't put any of the items in my shopping cart. It says

<< Note: Requested quantity not available for some items at this time. >>

May be a dead deal..

So true. So true.

(I just bought an 18" Philips LCD for about $960, hooked up my Evga Ti200 with digital cable, loaded
23.10 drivers, and played Nvidia demo on Cd - you'll never go back man! And Viewsonic has a 23" LCD now.
I only can shake my head at people buying 80 lb monitors.)

Did you happen to see that they have discontinued 18" Nokia LCD's for 699.99. For those looking for larger LCD screens.
