i got screwed......because my sister's fiance found htis deal the DAY AFTER i bought my phone for 99.....but oh well.

A lot of people were asking about this deal in the Bay Area. Well, Circuit City is giving a $50 gift card type thing with the purchase of the phone. i think it is B&M only, but you guys can check out the website.

99 - 50 = $49.

pretty good considering the fact that Cingular locked down the prices and we are about 6 hours away from LA.

good luck.

oh yeah....he got the 39.99 plan, so i am not sure if there is a minimum plan thing, but it is worth checking out. it probably works with the 29.99 plan.

well i am in San Jose, and i am getting better service with pacbell than i did with verizon.........and my sister has no complaints and she just switched with me from using At&T/CellOne.......her service probably isnt' aas good, but the plan and prices make it worth it.

As for the parrot cellular, most of them around here have had it for $49...i went to the one at White & quimby, next to taco bell, in San jose, if you know the area. they had it for free. if they are telling you $99 they might be talking about the t-28 WORLD. No big difference......the world is blue and is a dual band world phone that can be used in other countries......the t-28z is a single band dual that runs on US GSM networks.....no other diffrrence with reception or features or anything.....

as for 8290s for free.....i have been keeping up to date with all of the posts about this phone on the forum.....a lot of the small shops down in LA were giving the phone out for free but cingular wireless put out some lock down on prices saying that every cingular dealer has to sell the phones for the same price......and so it set a standard price of 99 for the phone...for more information just do a search on 8290 through the hot deals forum and you will find some threads about it.

in san diego you can get the phone for about 60 or something without rebates or anything.......but for us Bay Area people, i think this is the only deal around.

I got my 8890 in Irvine from a place called Unique Gifts. They are located in 99 Ranch Market. Here is their contact info:

Unique Gifts
15333 Culver Drive, Suite 800
Irvine, CA 92604
949.262.0463

Don't bother calling them up asking for a quote - Cingular agents who sell under what they should sell don't tell over the phone. They had the 8890 in January for $250. I purchased another one last week for $300.

BTW, ask for David

anyone here using Cingular? i'm curious to know how good the reception is, especially w/ San Jose. Yeah, PacBell does suck...i know of three people in the South Bay hating it's QoS. i've heard is just another brand of Pacbell but not so sure.

thanks,

I have Cingular and I love it. Pacbell is now part of Cingular, which is made up of a bunch of GSM companies like Southwestern Bell, bla bla bla...

I have Cingular/PacBell in the Bay Area and it's been decent for the 3 years I've had it. The problems I've had are:

1. no reception in certain buildings (usually concrete ones)
2. Some dead spots in the Oakland hills

I don't know much about Verizon or ATT, but everyone I know who has Sprint says it's the worst for reception and being cut off.

The reason why Pac Bell and Sprint suck in the Bay Area is because they use the CDMA 1900 PCS frequency. The cell phones that are single band and only use 1900 will get spotty reception. Try talking on your single-band PCS phone while driving in your car. You will probably lose the call at some time. You should definitely get a dual-mode 1900 CDMA & 800 AMPS phone, if you have PacBell or Sprint.

Verizon and AT&T use the more "mature" 800 CDMA/800 AMPS network, which is much more reliable at handshaking in the Bay Area. Handshaking is when you are on the move and the cellular antennas "hand off" you call from one antenna to the next, without dropping your call.

thanks shaady1,

i've been looking for a wireless phone company to sign up with in the bay area. i just went to a cingular store in oakland this weekend and they let me borrow a 5190 phone for a day. didn't work in my east bay apt, which is where i'd make most of my calls (free nights/weekends). my friends have had too many "no service" complaints cingular/pacbell.

i use sprint, and it barely works in my apt. plus, sprint's customer service is beyond suck. they simply would not listen to me when i had a billing error a couple months back. they said, "i'm sorry, that's our policy" to every question i asked them. now that's fuct up! :|

i'll check out at&t and verizon soon... any recommendations on where to get a good deal on phones? at&t offers a 3 day trial period, so i'll give them a try soon.
