this post is for So Cal ppo only. i was shopping for cell phone for a friend in san gabriel valley last weekend and came across some very nice deals. this shop in san gabriel (valley and new ave) was selling the 8290 for 20 plus tax if u go with any plan over $30. on top of that pacbell is running a special promotion right now on the $40 dollar plan that if u go over within 1000 mins they'll eat the cost. u can call (626)281-5118 to reach the store.

This phone comes free with one year service at VoiceStream in NYC--- I find VSTR to be better than ATT and equal that of MCI.

Voicestream may be cool compared to the others but i still don't get why they won't at least try to catch up with the GSM standard around the world. <g> I was so disappointed to find out that some features available on our GSM network in the PH isn't not working here for as VCSTRM would say "We don't support it yet". *sigh*

By the way, the 8290 is one cool phone! I like how i can IR it to my Palm and do regular surfing

I agree VoiceStream is definitely the way to go, too bad they aren't Nationwide (yet) or is that a good thing for us current subscribers?

VoiceStream Wireless is currently offering new customers:
600 weekday anytime minutes
2,000 free weekend nationwide - free long distance minutes

Ugh, this hurts! Since I'm a new customer I can't take advantage of the 2,000 free minutes offer.

rootaxs: I am curious what you mean about IR connecting to your palm and surfing the net. What kind of software do you need to do this? Do you need to subscribe to data services from your cellular service provider, or is there a way to dial-up your ISP? Any info on this would be helpful.

You can use the 8290 & 8890 as a wireless (IR) modem. Just dial up your ISP. Need to setup the account name and password on your Palm (IR Network connection).

i do the same thing. basicallly you have to have a dial up ISP and some basic software to get online on the palm. (web browser, email, dialup software) then after that you setup your palm to use a IR phone for modem and you activate both palm and phone!!

mchurchm, guess they both beat me to it
you can also go for AvantGo on your palm if you prefer offline browsing.. but that's no fun

Rossman, VoiceStream is pretty close to being nationwide they seem to have already bought out 90% of the GSM-based carriers in the US including Omnipoint, Aerial and one other. At least they're getting their act together - literally

So how much is the retail price you pay? The reason I ask is because I am a pacbell customer now and they give me $150 toward a purchase of a new phone. I wanted the ericsson t28 but I heard so many bad things about it that it made me think otherwise.

OK, which Voicestream store gives the 8290 away with a yearly agreement?! I thought they still sold it for ~$150...

I called this place TurtleMan mentioned and I can confirm that they will give you a Nokia 8290 for free if you sign up for 1 year with a plan $29.99 and up. I could barely understand the woman on the phone. Anyways, if you're interested, the phone number is (562) 865-6800. It's in Cerritos (or Norwalk).

Just to let you know that if you are Voicestream customer already and you want the 2000 weekend mins. just called cus. care and ask for it. I have called (all my friends also) and we did not have a problem getting this plan. I have been their customer for 3 years now, but they still gave me this promotion (it is supposed to be for new customers only).
