Last I checked, requests for hot deals were taboo on this board. You won't find too much variance in cell phone prices/plans anyway.

I have one of the 8290's and if you ask me, the reception isnt too great. I dont know if it is my area, or my phone, but Ive heard many people complain about its reception. The built in antenna I guess isnt too great. Just make sure to ask around before you get it. Ive heard the Nokia 8890 is a bit better.. but still not to great, and much more expensive...

It could be your area, i'm in Houston with VoiceStream (formerly Aerial) and the reception is great on my 8290! My only gripe is the GSM network here in the US is rather amateurish compared to that of Europe and Asia.

I'll tell you whats a deal. i got the 8290 at bestbuy for $170. They mail you $70 worth in bestbuy gift cards. The voicestream plan i signed up for is $40 for 600 mins regional and 1000 minutes long distance on weekends. Im in baltimore and the regional reaches up north to NY state.

reception is shady in some buildings. The phone itself is wonderful. I can use it with my pda as a wireless modem. no extra charges. i can recieve email as SMS. I can send SMS. I can play games. All of that on this small phone.

What area is this? I worked at a cell phone store and they were selling it for 80 dollars with activation.

Buy.com has the 8260 for $100 - $50 rebate = $50. The difference (I think) is the the 8260 has analog while the 8290 doesn't... but you need to use AT&T for the buy.com deal.

8260 and 8290 have some signifacnt differences, its not just different carriers w diff model #s...8290 is regarded as much better feature wise although with more limited range

there was a previous thread about asian phone stores selling these for $45..do a search or pick up a "free" newspaper where the cell phone companies advertise..

i live in san jose i bought mine for 99. but they tax me on the retail price. i sorta got ripped in a way. But i look at it as that other stores sell it for 179. I bought mine at a "asian" store. I'm with Att Wireless. I would never get pacbell because of all my friends complaining how it sux. Either Att Wireless or Sprint.

I got my 8290 for $80 at this Asian store called "Whats In" in Cupertino...in a shopping center called Cupertino Village, right next to Fantasia...it came out to $125 after tax (they supposodly tax the full price of the phone, which is $500)...activation isn't included ($40)...However, your acct is credited $10 a month for four months, to make up for it...

If reception is important to you, i wouldnt go with this phone...the reception is ok at times, but sometimes i will be outside near no hills and get 0 bars...and i have 0 in a lot of stores too, something that almost never happened with my old Startac w/ Cel One...friends w/ the 8860, which is notorious for its crappy reception, get better reception than me at times...

The only plans they offer at that place is Pac Bell Pac Plus, with the cheapest plan being for around $39, for 260 min weekdays and unlimited weekends, w/ call waiting, call ID, voicemail, 6 way conference calling, call forwarding, and call hold...there are other options such as free long distance, but nothing cheaper than $39...it is a year contract, with a $150 cancellation fee...

I believe pac bell just doesn't have a lot of stations in that area. i'm in LA and pac bell is fine. My dad and some friends are up north in saratoga and they don't get any reception out there. Perhaps cellular one has stations out that far, whereas pac bell doesn't. It isn't necessarily the phone. I have a lot of friends with that phone who love it down here in LA. I have the 8260 and that's good as well.

BTW, has anyone seen a better deal for the 8260 than buy.com?? They have it for $99 less $75 AT&T service rebate less $50 Nokia rebate = =$25!!!

Do the asian stores have it cheaper?? and has anyone in CA bought a phone from buy.com --if so how much are you taxed???

ETLA, if you want to buy a phone w/out activation, it'll cost you about 299 for the 8290. only reason it's cheap (i got mine for 30) is because you sign the contract...

In New York City, some stores are offering the 8290 FREE with Voicestream one year contract. I got the $39.99 (minimum) plan with 300 anytime minutes and 500 weekend minutes, and you can use them to call all over US and Canada.
