This is why I added the "for me" part in my statement. I don't like only keeping 50 images on my phone, and I would rather not rely on cloud backup. In fact, I would rather a company make a phone with 128GB built-in. Yeah, that's right, 128GB built in.

Well, if you're waiting for that, you won't be buying a phone for a while- maybe ever since cloud storage is the way everything is going.

Got my phone yesterday.

Absolutely amazing photos.
Lighter then my 920 was.

Recommend for all.

Friend of mine bought this phone. Played with it yesterday.

Simply put, the best phone I've ever used. Camera quality obliterates anything on the market. Was surprised how fluid, fast, and simple WP8 was in practice. Screen is gorgeous and works well outdoors.

Outside of the limited selection of apps, I have a hard time finding faults with this phone. If you are tied into the Google ecosystem, it's gonna be tough though as they don't have any official apps for WP8.

Cloud storage is only good for pics, audio and video. And not even video depending on how fast your connection is and how low your data cap. You also can't install apps to a cloud, and newer apps are getting bigger and bigger. I know it's not a phone, but Apple released a 128gb iPad 4. And I'd bet money they'll have a 128gb version of whatever the next iPhone is called. Cloud also requires a data plan unless you have wifi. It's not a good solution for many of us. I would imagine people with this phone would be taking full 41 megapixel pics. Imagine uploading those to a cloud with a 2gb cap? It would be toast in a matter of a few days.

Boom. The biggest problem with Windows Phone right now.

I'm leaning heavily towards selling my 920 and picking one of these up. I'd be out of pocket about $300. I really just want that camera.

The amount of positive response this phone is receiving is baffling to me, and I've been a Windows Phone user since the first generation of Windows Phone 7 handsets released.

Don't get me wrong, the phone doesn't suffer any fatal flaws, but I assumed it was far too niche of a product to even attract enough attention to be reviewed. I lumped it into the same category as the as the Galaxy S4 Zoom. Oh well, maybe Nokia got the "absurdly good camera in a phone" bit right somehow.

That may sound extremely anti-Nokia, but I use a Lumia 920 and love it. The idea that the Lumia 1020 could be appreciated by average people is what strikes me as so bizarre.

Well, they are praising the camera, not so much the OS. The OS itself still has some rough edges that need to be smoothed over, but the camera performance is so impressive, there is no doubt it is the new bar, beating the crown the iPhone has had for so many years. And with Apple's desire for thinness, it's unlikely they'll ever take it back.

I wish I could by this phone but the fact it's tied to AT&T, only 720p, and only dual-core stop me from doing so. I'm on T-Mobile, want 1080p, and MSM8974 simply because I know the benefit from all three in my opinion. Hopefully it won't take 6 months to get other carrier versions like the 920 -> 925/928 did.

The camera is so far ahead of its competition it warrants a real look at a Windows Phone for the first time. Once people realize how simple, clean, and efficient the OS is they tend to overlook the fact that not ALL of their apps are available on the platform but most of the necessary ones are.

It's just a beautiful package through and through. If I were Nokia I'd be pissed MSFT is holding them back at this point.

The camera bit is what is confusing me. Among its peers (the iPhone 5 and Galaxy S3), the Lumia 920's camera was very impressive. I understand that it didn't absolutely destroy the iPhone 5/SGS3 like the Lumia 1020's camera destroys the SGS4/HTC One's, but it was still quite a bit ahead. The Lumia 920's camera outperforms the HTC One and SGS4 most of the time, actually.

Granted, I suppose the 920's camera wasn't really advertised as a selling point. The irony is that the HTC One and SGS4 are a generation ahead of the Lumia 1020. The Lumia 920, 1020, and iPhone 5 are members of the generation that existed with the SGS3. Hopefully we hear about Nokia's next generation of Lumias soon.

Also, I have to say I agree on Nokia being pissed. I don't think Windows Phone holds Nokia back at all, but I do believe Microsoft needs to speed their update cycle up. I believe going with Android would've put Nokia in a worse position than HTC is in.

Nokia wanted no part playing second fiddle to Samsung. Hell even Google is afraid of Samsung, hence the Motorola acquisition.

I believe ultimately Nokia made the right choice at the time. They are unfortunately just too late to market. MSFT needs to devote more resources to WP or they simply will never get the necessary traction to attract developers to the platform. I want to see faster updates and the platform being brought up to feature parity sooner. Also, they have to stop with these AT&T exclusive releases. Put phones out on all major platforms for once please.

Oh, I agree that Nokia made the right choice. As it is, "major" OEMs who produce Android devices are all lagging behind Samsung. ZTE and Huawei make loads of money on Android, but have no real presence outside of emerging markets. Nokia is successfully dominating the WP platform.

I don't think we're going to see carrier exclusivity go anywhere in America any time soon, however. It's the price OEMs have to pay in order to get advertising.

AT&T advertises the Lumia 920 as "exclusive to AT&T."
T-Mobile advertises the Lumia 925 as "exclusive to T-Mobile."
Verizon advertises the Lumia 928 as "exclusive to Verizon."

The fact is, they're the same phone.

If I didn't have such an ancient family plan/unlimited data/employee discount on Verizon, I would be realistically considering switching to AT&T for this phone. And this is coming from someone with a 928 (which I am steadily loving more and more, the low light performance really is incredible).

The 1020 finally makes it reasonable to say:

ZOOM! ENHANCE!

I so badly want a 1020 but I am on freaking Verizon the network of crappy phones........uh........I can't switch either because it has unlimited everything and fully paid for by employer. So I guess I shouldn't complaint..

I am drooling over that camera....

So, just for shits & giggles, I went and looked at one in the AT&T store today. Played around with the Pro Camera app. It's a really nice device and feels a lot better than the 920. I know Nokia was trying to push wireless charging, but I just don't think the general public is really catching on and so removing the extra bulk and weight really helps.

I snapped a couple of photos in the store with my L920 and the L1020 on display. I transferred one of the photos over to my L920 so I could check it out. I expected it to be the 38MP version, but when I got back to the office, it was just the 5MP version.

It doesn't matter. The 5MP version looks better than the 8.2MP out of the 920. Detail is far more sharp and color was better. I could shoot on the 5MP mode all day long and be happy.

I would switch to WP8 full time for this camera if it weren't for just some nagging shortcomings in the OS and the ecosystem. I also wish the hardware was significantly upgraded from the 920 as well.

I think I'm going to hold my breath for next year.

5" Would be cool.
1080P is almost, if not completely pointless to me.
Quadcore is definitely pointless on a WP device.

1020 is amazing. Just gotta say.

Doesn't matter. I'm going balls to the wall with my next phone.

I want 5". I want 1080P. I want an insane camera.

Quadcore is icing on the cake.

This is the most respectable post I've seen in a while.

You acknowledge that WP8 won't really benefit from a quad-core CPU to the same extent Android devices do, but you want it anyway.

The Lumia 928 is thinner and weighs less than the 920 and has integrated charging. Granted, I would prefer to put a case on my phone anyway so in the end I think making the wireless charging optional is the way to go.

(I have an Incipio Feather case on my 928 anyway)

Too bad AT&T doesn't have unlimited prepaid for $70... else I'd jump and get this instead. Currently using Tmobile instead... I can wait... I can wait... my Note 2 is good enough...

You know the photo processing on the Lumia 1020 is done by the CPUs in addition to the ISP, right? Though I suspect they'd be less reliant on them since Snapdragon 800 is rated to handle 55MP photos and the S4 only 20MP, some of that image processing will still likely be done at the CPU level. For THIS phone, quad-core definitely matters.

1080p also matters since you want to see as much detail in your photos as possible (and please don't quote 300 DPI blah blah from Apple, that only applies if you hold your phone out at full arm's length, which isn't true when taking a photo and your arms are folded).

If you're willing to buy unlocked and in the right area for it, it does AWS LTE band and 1900MHz WCDMA for refarmed HSPA.

I love my 1020, I have been on WP since January however. I am pretty sure we will see the 1080p quad core phones late this year. I think it will be this time next year until Nokia does a 808, 1020 style phone again. At least that's what I am betting as 1080p and quad core mean very little to me on WP. The GUI and every app is super fast and can't see it being anything I want over the camera on my 1020.
