Better specs are always welcome, just not at the cost of optimization. WP7/8 have always performed so well because they were tailored specifically to work on a given set of SoCs, not simply because the OS is particularly lightweight. There's just a lot of optimization that can be done when "standard" platforms are produced.
Aside from that, does anyone with a Lumia 1020 notice a performance improvement when compared to the Lumia 920? I'm actually curious of what (if anything) the extra RAM accomplishes. I don't expect programs like WPBench to properly gauge the potential differences because they haven't been updated since WP7.5 (Snapdragon S2/512MB RAM) devices were launched. They are, bluntly, outdated benchmarks.
