Better specs are always welcome, just not at the cost of optimization. WP7/8 have always performed so well because they were tailored specifically to work on a given set of SoCs, not simply because the OS is particularly lightweight. There's just a lot of optimization that can be done when "standard" platforms are produced.

Aside from that, does anyone with a Lumia 1020 notice a performance improvement when compared to the Lumia 920? I'm actually curious of what (if anything) the extra RAM accomplishes. I don't expect programs like WPBench to properly gauge the potential differences because they haven't been updated since WP7.5 (Snapdragon S2/512MB RAM) devices were launched. They are, bluntly, outdated benchmarks.

I haven't noticed any sort of performance difference between a L920 and L1020.

Even when using the task switcher? That's the only time I'd expect it to perform any differently. I guess it's hard to properly quantify. You could throw synthetic benchmarks at it, but none accurately reflect the performance of the platform.

I don't use the task switcher, sorry. It's pretty worthless, IMO.

Really? Fast app resume is significantly better than relaunching an app, I'd say

It may be for you. For me, it's just as quick for me to tap the start key and tap the icon for my app as opposed to holding the back key and scrolling for my app.

It's not really a failing of Windows Phone. I don't use the app switching in iOS or Android either.
