How do you get traits from bacteria or even an apple to appear in corn via selective breeding?

You can just grow plants until you see your desired trait appear (convergent evolution, where disparate paths produce the same phenotype). But for very different things, or if you're looking for a very specific trait (and not just a phenotype of resistance to x), the odds of it happening are extremely slim.

Sometimes, for plant crosses, you can find a wild plant with a similar gene and get them to breed together, but that generally has low chances of success. Hence, the desire to move the genes directly.

Now you wouldn't have happened to have accidentally left off a few lines of that dictionary entry there would you?
I mean I'd hate to think that you were being deliberately disingenuous. That would say something terrible about your character so I guess that it must have been accidental.

That was the meaning of Organic until the fucking hippies bastardized it.

So is shit, but we don't need to make sandwiches with it.

But seriously, you do know that the term is used to denote foods grown using certain legally (well sort of) defined methods, right?

Yes I do know the bastardized meaning as well.

That is as stupid as saying you actually considered eating a literal shit sandwich.

Yeah, I bet that is exactly what millions of Africans who are currently starving to death are worried about right now. Thank heavens they were saved from GMO food or they might have potentially dangerous food to eat versus no food to eat! Lucky bastards.

No shit. Things like Golden Rice could be saving countless people from very painful and long deaths. But the human garbage parade seems perfectly ok with that.

Yay! lets not encourage people to eat a varied diet but lets lock them into a monoculture owned by multinational corporations.

Free patents all round and woe betide anyone that tries to save some of this years crop to sow next year.

There is nothing "bastardized" about it.

It is a vernacular term for foods grown using organic farming methods.

It's a term that has been used for decades; I'm surprised you haven't run across it before.

If you want to intelligently discuss a subject, it helps to agree upon terms and conditions.

Most people here have tacitly agreed we will use common English language terminology.

No need to be a dick about it.

For some strange reason I believe said people would much prefer the above than to have no food to eat at all. I know, its a crazy idea.

WelshGarbage seems perfectly ok with people dying en-mass as long as he's "fighting the power!" just for the sake of "fighting the power!"

Why do you assume that I hate science because I avoid GMO food. I know you are just looking for a chance to throw shit, but really, why show your lack of imagination and throw shit on yourself?

Holy crap, the guy who says conservatives have a brain defect for having morals and values avoids GMOs?

bullshit

Those were natural crosses, not forced DNA merging with animal DNA.

And it wasn't designed to be resistant to any pesticides like glyphosate.

All GMO supporters are full of crap, because these things are biological weapons, an avreage citizen won't notice anything until all his friends and family drop dead, there's too many people to wake up, I alert those I can, but ofcourse I don't lose anything just because some stoner on a forum doesn't agree and rationalized the whole thing, I know how to save my self, do you ?

I don't generally support GMO, because of the corporate nature of it (having dealt with and performed various transgenics methods, raising animals, even; I actually understand that there is essentially nothing to fear in them), but this kind of language is pure FUD.

educate yourself. You make legitimate critics and skeptics sound like whackado turdballs. Not a single thing you mentioned in this post is, in anyway, reflective of the actual biology behind the process.

Somebody has to say it:

All food is Organic.

or·gan·ic
ôrˈganik/
adjective
adjective: organic

1. of, relating to, or derived from living matter.

....which is the type of argument one formulates after their intro to chemistry course in the 7th grade.

Yeah. Go look up terminator technology and get back to me about feeding the poor.

Oh, and work on your personal insults as well, they are weak.

And why would that be?

Why did you even bring it up then?

Next WelshBloke will try to prove that we didn't land on the moon and that the earth is flat, all the while using no scientific evidence, logic, or reason!

You are slow arent you?

The only reason the terminator technology wasnt released in current seeds was public outcry.

The sort of thing that you seem to be crying about now.

No, I'll leave it up to you just to blindly believe stuff regardless of the science behind it.

You just carry on believing that Monsantos main goal is to feed the starving. Its probably best you dont think too deeply about it, you dont seem suited to it.

Do you honestly not believe that multiple goals can coexist and support one another, such as Monsanto wants to make money, by creating and selling novel GMO plant seeds that greatly increase agricultural yield, with feeding the starving being an incidental but welcome benefit?

Are you one of those types who are so intractably opposed to your perceived enemy (in this case Monsanto, or perhaps big business in general) that you can't see the good they also accomplish? And likely would just as soon stop them from those beneficial activities in order to prevent them from the possibility that they might do something else harmful somewhere? Folks do that all the time with church groups, to the point of seeking to remove tax benefits for doing charity work because *gasp* they also proselytize at the same time. Or some priests diddled young boys somewhere.

As you say feeding the starving is an incidental goal for them (ie. they don't care about feeding them at all).
That's pretty obvious when you look at the thrust of their research.

I'm not totally opposed to GMOs by the way. I am opposed to artificially constraining the supply of food to increase profitability however.

Does organic also count for DOMESTICATED livestock?

Domesticated livestock is essentially humans tinkering with the genetics of wild animals in order to produce ideal livestock.

Do people who swear by organic / non-gmo also only eat game or do they draw an imaginary line when it comes to domesticated animals because that's considered an "old" genetic practice and their problem is only with "new" genetic practices?

Golden Rice wasn't developed by a big bad corporation, yet people are still terrorizing field trials and mindlessly protesting against it.

Unfortunately battle lines have been drawn.
The argument seems to be we have to accept all GMOs or have to press for none. There doesn't seem to be a mechanism for banning the more outrageous acts of big biotech while allowing the better ones.

At the moment the side which seems to be the better one is the one pressing for none.

The battle lines have been drawn because ignorance is confusing corporate practices with the science driving the technology. People are cutting their noses to spite their faces.
