...from before any of us were even aware of things in China.

It doesn't hurt the carrier but, obviously, it does hurt many people they spread it to. It harms our ability to identify and contain it. Carriers don't know they ever had the flu and go on thinking they are healthier and stronger than everyone. Your immune response is what makes you "sick." An asymptomatic carrier not being sick is a huge problem for the vulnerable people around them.

I don't entirely buy that. It's not solely your immune response that makes you sick - otherwise you'd be better off with no immune system at all! Eventually the disease will make you sick directly, regardless of your immune system response caused symptoms. If your immune system doesn't respond you will get really sick really quickly.

Does anyone actually believe the Summer Olympics will go ahead? Or the Euro 2020? I seriously doubt UEFA Champions League will finish this year.
An illness such as this will disrupt things for the WHOLE year @ THE VERY LEAST, be it in the form of overtaxed hospitals or in the recovery efforts after the crisis is over. Expect the World Economy to take a nosedive in the double digits.

Most countries still aren't reacting the right way: the growth of this thing is EXPONENTIAL, which is why the number of cases doubles every 4 days or so.

Italy has the right idea but they should have done it @ least 2 weeks ago. The cost of all this will be ASTRONOMICAL but the cost of failing to react properly will be MUCH MORE SEVERE, be it monetary or people's lives.

Yup, seemed obvious to me as soon as it escaped Hubai that the Olympics was doomed. Ditto various rugby and soccer matches. Seems ridiculous that people are so hung up on stupid sporting events. Who cares if this year we don't determine a 'winner' for various sports? Maybe give it a miss for one year? In fact maybe if all these contests get cancelled this year, people will realise it doesn't actually matter whether we determine who is the best at running or kicking a ball around? We don't actually need to know! Nothing disastrous will happen if we fail to find out.

You cannot just look at the number of deaths vs infections and say their health care system is to blame. It all comes down to the age of the people that have died. People over 60 are far more likely to have complications. If we looked at the nursing home in Washington state and the number of workers/residents in that nursing home, the death rate would be extremely high because of the number of 60+ year old people.

Just to note, most of the deaths from the Spanish Flu came in the 20 - 40 year old range which is why it was so deadly.

I still see people coughing wide open while shopping every day.
I don't like to see that either, but it honestly doesn't bother me as much as coughing into hands.

Coughing into an elbow or hand or tissue doesn't catch any significant amount of the moisture and microbes. You'd have to cough into a latex condom and seal it up to accomplish that.

Coughing into hands will transfer things onto surfaces that people touch.

Coronavirus can spread asymptomatically. Why is that sentence so hard to understand?

You can spread COVID-19 without displaying symptoms.
I don't know why people think that's so noteworthy. The same applies to influenza too.

Without symptoms, they aren't oozing saliva and mucous on everything. If an asymptomatic carrier is careful they can minimize the risk. Obviously kissing / swapping spit with an asymptomatic carrier would do it.

I honestly think some people are actually scared/worried, but trying to find a way to not be, like convincing themselves that somehow this isn't as bad as it is.

Yeah we're not at the point of cannibalism but yes, this is a bad virus, it's one that will be documented and talked about for another century, just like Spanish Flu.

I did wonder about that - whether it would spread faster in touchy-feely cultures than in cold and standoffish ones. Then wondered if it was bad to wonder about such a thing - a bit victim-blaming or even racist? I suspect in reality it's more due to nothing more complex than how early the outbreak got started in a region. I also don't think you can fully trust any country's reporting. Japan still doesn't seem to have given up on the belief they can go ahead with the Olympics.
Married America is safe.

... I tried to sell n95 masks on ebay for a affordable price and for some reason they took down my listing saying something about item not allowed because of price gouging (which i wasnt even doing) but i see others with their n95 listings 120$ for 20 ;( wonder what happens if i list them here
List as 24-hour auction and start bids at $0.01

Do not set a buy-it-now price.
Do not set a reserve price.

That's what I do with my UltraHDMI upgraded N64s. Many of them sold for over $1,000

What I don't understand is the crazy high death rate from this virus in Italy vs South Korea. Italy has 463 deaths while SK has 53. I know Italy has lot of old people but so does South Korea. Is Italy medical care system that bad?

Not an expert but I assume SK are more prepared for outbreaks, East Asia have seen some shit the last 20yrs, SARS, pig flu, bird flu.....pretty much something will pop up every 2-3yrs. Where EU were relatively calm.

right, but there is also the fact that this specific assisted living home in Washington was already cited for shit care. So, there is the combined factor, in most of these reported cases, that you have elderly/compromised patients + limited or lack-of care. afaik, we're not seeing the elderly die off at the same rate when their care is considerably better than those in these facilities and geographic regions that are noted for poor access.

Just to note, most of the deaths from the Spanish Flu came in the 20 - 40 year old range which is why it was so deadly.

yup--but also note that the Spanish flu had two major outbreaks. The 2nd one in fall/winter of 2018 returned after ~6 months dormancy, and that strain is the one that tuned up the young people, iirc.

Sorry, yeah I meant total.

According to this site, Italy now has 9,172 cases and 463 deaths. SK has 7,513 cases and 54 deaths. Huge difference in number of deaths. New cases in SK is on the decline.

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/italy/

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/south-korea/

The only logical conclusion I can make provided Italy medical system is not Third World quality is there are lot more unreported cases in Italy. Like 8 times the number of reported cases.

I saw somewhere a few days ago that Italy was completely overwhelmed and is only testing the more severe cases, they are very under reported right now. SK is still testing everyone they can get their hands on that is why they have such a high ratio of asymptomatic/mild cases compared to everyone else.

Italy now at 10,149 cases. Death toll at 631. That's jump of 168 deaths in a day.

Deaths will grow exponentially too.

My workplace is starting to brace for the potential of us working from home. Getting VPN access setup etc. I don't think we'll get the virus here but they just want to be prepared.

Would actually be pretty sweet if through this they found having people work from home is better somehow and it becomes a normal thing. Need to invest in 3 4k monitors though but I'd be willing to if it meant working from home most/all the time. I would move somewhere cheaper to live.

I use two 40" 4k Samsung screens for my home office setup...they are only 30 htz refresh though but that isn't too bad for work stuff...if I wanted 60 htz, I would either need to use a single screen or drop down to 1080p which ain't gonna happen...

The Staples in Bolton, the guy at the counter made it seem like they get regular stock and don't sell out quickly. My father in law picked up 20+ bottles for his employees at work to use as well.
