Epidemiologists feel free to chime in. What is the projection if this virus starts propagating in a 3rd world country without adequate health facilities and quarantine measures? Looks like China is having a hard time and they built a hospital in 8 days and have entire cities on lockdown.

The largest mineral show on earth starts Friday in my fair city. People from all over the world will come together to paw over the shinies. Gonna need hand sanitizer by the tanker load.
Chinese dealers have had their homebound flights cancelled. Some are already looking at extending their visas for the long haul. One dealer who is US based was arranging US vacation travel for her China based staff. They might as well see the Grand Canyon if they can't get home.

Many Chinese dealers and buyers are wearing facemasks. I think it is more about concern that people won't come into their booths than any real issue.

So far, there are very few cases of human-to-human transmission outside of China. Hopefully it stays that way. We still don't know how transmissible this is while being in asymptomatic incubation.

EDIT: On the other hand, Thailand has over 300 suspected cases spread across the country. Taiwan and Vietnam also appear to have a bunch of suspected cases scattered throughout. I would't be surprised if southeast Asia gets hit hard too.
And then there's India...

I think that is what everyone is afraid of, India is more packed then China and fewer resources to deal with and outbreak.

How long does it take for coronavirus testing for the results to confirm whether or not somebody actually has the virus?
-is it a blood test or some other type of test?

It was really frustrating dealing with Delta over the weekend. First of all -- why do I have to call and spend an hour and a half on the phone in order to get a refund for a flight that is cancelled? I know this isn't the airlines fault, but you would think they could be more accommodating. I had an open jaw booked, arriving into PKX (Beijing) and leaving HND (Tokyo). They wanted to cancel my entire trip -- no, I'm not rebooking the return leg at a higher price than what I originally paid. Then they wanted to refund me the current price of the PKX ticket, which was about half what I paid for it. Not sure what that even means -- the flight is cancelled, so the "current" price is meaningless. And I want the refund at the damn price I paid. Finally got there after being placed on hold four times.

Anyways, we rebooked through Seoul and are spending the first four days of our trip there instead. There's a few cases in South Korea, but I'm not going to get worried about numbers that are similar to the number of US cases.

For now I'll take the president that is defined by imposing travel bans, increasing border security, and was confident enough to spark a trade war with China while almost everyone else was falling all over themselves to pacify China and cater to their demands. DJT may not be the hero we deserve, but he is probably the hero we need at this point in history.

If coronavirus becomes widespread in the US, everything goes to hell in a handbasket no matter who is president. The establishment bureaucrats in the government agencies will be running the show for the most part, and they essentially have nothing but a long list of bad options to choose from in order to prevent chaos while simultaneously fighting further spread of the disease.

While it is calm now in the US, everything is in jeopardy, even the 2020 elections. At this point its not hard to imagine a scenario where candidates no longer are able to campaign in public when everyone with the virus is the equivalent of a bioweapon, or it's deemed to dangerous to hold political conventions/rallies/protests for fear of spreading the disease, or it is considered too unsafe by the public for thousands of people to congregate at polling stations to cast their vote. China is living under those conditions right now.

Ya about that hero thing:

For the United States, the answers are especially worrying because the government has intentionally rendered itself incapable. In 2018, the Trump administration fired the government’s entire pandemic response chain of command, including the White House management infrastructure. In numerous phone calls and emails with key agencies across the U.S. government, the only consistent response I encountered was distressed confusion. If the United States still has a clear chain of command for pandemic response, the White House urgently needs to clarify what it is—not just for the public but for the government itself, which largely finds itself in the dark....

...
But that’s all gone now.

In the spring of 2018, the White House pushed Congress to cut funding for Obama-era disease security programs, proposing to eliminate $252 million in previously committed resources for rebuilding health systems in Ebola-ravaged Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea. Under fire from both sides of the aisle, President Donald Trump dropped the proposal to eliminate Ebola funds a month later. But other White House efforts included reducing $15 billion in national health spending and cutting the global disease-fighting operational budgets of the CDC, NSC, DHS, and HHS. And the government’s $30 million Complex Crises Fund was eliminated.

In May 2018, Trump ordered the NSC’s entire global health security unit shut down, calling for reassignment of Rear Adm. Timothy Ziemer and dissolution of his team inside the agency. The month before, then-White House National Security Advisor John Bolton pressured Ziemer’s DHS counterpart, Tom Bossert, to resign along with his team. Neither the NSC nor DHS epidemic teams have been replaced. The global health section of the CDC was so drastically cut in 2018 that much of its staff was laid off and the number of countries it was working in was reduced from 49 to merely 10. Meanwhile, throughout 2018, the U.S. Agency for International Development and its director, Mark Green, came repeatedly under fire from both the White House and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. And though Congress has so far managed to block Trump administration plans to cut the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps by 40 percent, the disease-fighting cadres have steadily eroded as retiring officers go unreplaced....

We are not prepared for a pandemic like we were under the previous administration.

As long as the virus does not cause an outbreak in Shanghai, I think China will survive this Coronavirus epidemic. Shanghai is the economic capital of China, and it is just 3 to 4 neighboring cities away from Wuhan.

it take several hours for coronavirus testing for the results to confirm.
The new developed testing box needs only one hour and more accurate.
Not a blood test, only get some liquids from mouth(nasopharynx) and lung.

A 39 yr old male in Hong Kong died from the virus today. From social media it appears that the individual was pro-China and intentionally went to Wuhan on Jan 21 to try to show people that it was not as dangerous as people think. Well now he's dead and his family is being quarantined.

Shut down ALL travel from Asia. Screen passengers carefully. Let no one who has been to the region in x amount of time board a plane or ship.

edit...spelling.

Won't work and it never has. Why? On average one person infects about 3 and that's without showing symptoms.

So an infected person, say Chinese goes to Russia and infects someone. The Russian goes to Poland for a conference. The Pol goes to the UK to visit family on the train, infecting others on the way. From France a train to the UK. The infected person from the UK is now exposing US citizens or others traveling by any means, including air/boat etc.

The virus is now in the US and everywhere before you ever knew it, and in fact, is here now.

In a global society containment of something so virulent is impossible. Not hard but impossible. You can't even kill the infected faster than the disease disseminates.

Doesn't even need that many degrees of separation. I work on a campus with thousands of Chinese students. If even 10% of them went back for the Chinese new year, that could be hundreds that could have potentially been exposed within China's borders.

I agree, just using the extreme to illustrate the reality. I'm going to bet that in the biowarfare labs we "don't have" this has already had the hell (close to literal that) engineered out of it, or into I should say.

The death is reported on all news outlet, though without the details. The back story was digged up from his fb posts which is in Chinese and shared among hong kong ppl in social media. A friend of mine lives in the apartment building right next to the building of the deceased man, and ppl there are really concerned.

It seems that China releases updated numbers at around 7 AM China time (6 p.m. EST). I could be off by an hour or two. But, as others have stated, we have no idea how accurate these numbers are.
