Copper is the only metal that is deadly to viruses, bacterial and fungal infections. The International Journal of Infection Control reports copper is effective in fighting disease which develop drug resistant mutations.

I actually deposit small copper wire shavings in the water bath of our temp/CO2 incubator (we use for embryo culture). It's less-damaging to the metal and components in the incubator than spiking the water with SDS or some other critter-killing decontaminates.

c2sulfate is used a lot in both aquatics and even was used in custom liquid watercooling coolant.

Copper is great stuff, it kills just about everything.
But copper 2 sulfate which we used is acidic, so we shifted away from that and started using more silver.
Silver is great as well, but does not have the antiviral.

This is why I eat copper as a snack. Nothing better than munching on some wire.
the more electricity that runs through that wire, the better.
pro tip: 20k volts is guaranteed to kill anything in your body thus why the power company makes it hard to access with fences, cameras and guards

I thought silver was just as good as copper, if not better -- but it appears that is not quite the case? I did find that it's antimicrobial but apparently that's all classes of microbe that aren't called virus. But it seems silver has been the big thing to be included in everything for the antibacterial effect, whereas copper for whatever reason has been the "it does magic when we put it in compression sleeves"

I wonder how bad this is going to get? China just had their worst day with this virus. USA just confirmed our first death.

We are taught that history repeats itself. Could this be a repeat of the Spanish flu that killed millions? Or, will our technology save us from another major outbreak?

It's too slow. It needs to take people within hours instead of making them suffer for days and run up huge medical bills for their families, if any.

All this panic from many people (not all) that consider flu just a pest. I wonder how many posting concern haven't gotten a flu shot?

Flu has 0.1% death rate, R naught of 1.28 and 1% hospitalization rate while nCoV 2019 has 4.3% estimated death rate, R naught of 4.08 estimated and 20% hospitalization rate. Huge difference.

This is not even comparable to the flu. The flu is just a cold on steroids and you let it pass. The people who die from it usually already have complications that even the common cold would have killed them. This virus is killing even healthy people and requires immediate treatment which a lot of people arn't getting due to lack of resources.

That's the CCP line. Thought we were past it and everyone who previously said flu was as or more concerning was ashamed by this point, but... NOPE!

Edit: Winston has some choice words about that attitude...

Yea, and we are in the early stage of this virus. Who knows what cold happen!

Imagine if this gets out of hand. I've played enough plague Inc to know what could take place.

Go to underdeveloped nations without vaccinations and check out mortality and morbidity and you'll find science and sanitation makes quite the difference. Besides, how do you get that figure for the flu? Almost no one dies of the flu, but it kills a good many anyway. Case in point, someone gets influenza and it causes a secondary problem of pneumonia and the patient dies.

So what is on the death certificate?

On death certificate from what I've read, its influenza in the west but in China its not hence official death numbers are very low when in reality its way higher.

It's still pneumonia in most places "secondary to" although there are exceptions. The point is that there is no universal standard at least in the US.

Now does this mean that coronavirus is not a threat? No, it is a very serious potential one but that will be known fully in retrospect.

In the meantime "the flu is just a bad cold" mentality is ridiculous.

A particularly nasty influenza strain is more prone to develop into particularly deadly conditions, like pneumonia.

A particularly nasty coronavirus strain is more prone to develop into particularly deadly conditions, like pneumonia.

Haven't you heard? This is a particularly nasty coronavirus strain that puts your average seasonal flu to shame. Heck, if it weren't for modern medicine/understanding we might've already been seeing a pandemic like Spanish Flu.

No reason to be panicked here yet but there is reason to be more concerned than we are with the seasonal flu we already have.

Concern is appropriate when seen in context. Terror fueled by ignorance is not and right now that's where we are for many.

The coronavirus concerns me more right now as a basis for a modified virus in the unknown but still short term near future.
