Denmark is going to kill off all their minks because the virus has mutated in the minks and then spread back to humans.

Link
COPENHAGEN (Reuters) - Denmark will cull its entire herd of up to 17 million mink after a mutation of the coronavirus found in the animals spread to humans, posing risk to any possible future vaccine, the prime minister said on Wednesday.

Outbreaks at mink farms have persisted in the Nordic country, the world’s largest producer of mink skins, despite repeated efforts to cull infected herds since June.

Health authorities found virus strains in humans and in mink which showed decreased sensitivity against antibodies, potentially lowering the efficacy of future vaccines, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said at a press conference.

Denmark’s health minister said around half of 783 infected Danes in Northern Denmark, home to a large number of mink farms, had been infected with a virus strain stemming from the farms.

Where do they stick 17 million minks? Denmark isn't that big. Anyway, I guess I should be looking for good deals on mink seat covers in the near future.

Or how do they kill that many efficiently while minimizing risk of exposure, I hope it's at least done humanly. I don't imagine any kind of injections or even a gun is viable to kill that many. Gas chambers? I suppose that is a semi humane way of doing it,they can just stick all the cages in there, then dump bodies in a pile to burn. Still a pretty gruesome thing no matter what way you go about it though. Sucks to have to do that.

Sad to read about the minks. It's like when countries killed all their pigs because of swine flu and buried it. I read lot of innocent pigs were buried alive in mass pits. Pretty disturbing stuff.

They should sell them to a nation that could use them as a food source that will eat anything...like China.

It must suck to be a pig. Around here, they're smoked in massive pits.

IDK why but just seeing the word minks, post after post, is hilarious.

Did anyone ever think about -- THE MINKS.

If this mutation in Sweden is running around and making the current vaccines useless, then humans are screwed.

National Geographic ran a story a couple days ago as "Virus Hunter" and how new viruses are lurking around and we have nothing to stop them.

I'll be concerned when they tell me it's spreading from human to human or has already caused an antigenic shift in the human version of the virus.

I'm pretty sure the mutated virus can spread from human to human since they are now putting in place extra restrictions in those areas. Covid-20?

The Prime Minister said new restrictions will be introduced in certain areas of Denmark to contain the spread of the mutated virus, including Hjorring, Frederikshavn, Bronderslev, Jammerbugt, Vesthimmerland, Thisted and Laeso municipalities.
"Unfortunately, the residents of those municipalities have to prepare for further restrictions in the near future," she said.

I have no proof but i'm convinced that's it's the schools that are driving the spread. Here's why:

1 - parent(s) catch the virus somewhere and remain asymptomatic
2 - parent(s) pass it on to kid(s) that also remain asymptomatic
3 - kid(s) pass it on to fellow classmate(s), also asymptomatic, not in classes themselves but either between classes or entering / leaving schools
4 - fellow classmate(s) pass it on to their parents

It's more along the lines of:
1) The family attended a wedding/party/outside school sporting event their child was involved in they just couldn't miss because of all the things they and their child were missing out in
2) The parent/child started exhibiting mild symptoms but they didn't tell anyone at school and continued going because they are in denial/don't believe covid is a thing/don't want to have to quarantine and miss out on things/are giant pieces of shit
3) a bunch of people get it for some reason.

I have seen the above situation play out at several different schools this year - more than once.

I'm really fucking pissed at all the.... people who are fucking with the lives of other kids, teachers, admin etc at school. There's no real consequences if they don't tell anyone so they skirt by with a "oh we didn't know we were infected. Sure 20 other people at that wedding got infected but we thought we were fine so my kid came to school and fucked with their mask all day so it spread everywhere."

Teaching was a shit job before but it's 1000x worse now.

I'm still hearing about indoor family gatherings and we're 8 months into this. There was an outbreak stemming from an indoor birthday party that sickened a decent chunk of my far extended family, including a few kids, and someone has died as a result. People seem to think that they're safe around people they know which we know just isn't true. Health officials haven't done the best job at explaining this but I'm not really convinced it would do a lot of good here. Many people are selfish or in denial, which in large part is how we ended up in this situation to begin with.

I'm sorry to hear about that. I think you're right on the 'I know these people so it's safe' mentality. I also think there is a largish group of people who were holding off on doing things, think there is some risk to COVID but it's not that bad, are now getting tired of not being able to do things so they are now doing those things. If the worst thing in your life is you go your senior year without any dances, don't have a large birthday party or have to wait a year or two to get married I'd say you're doing pretty well compared to most of the world's population but that doesn't appear to resonate with many for a variety of reasons

UK has the highest daily deaths ever as it is entering another lock down. All non essential shopping, leisure, and entertainment locations are forced to close.

I agree with people getting tired of waiting. I know we all feel it.

Relatedly it seems AZ thinks they'll have definitive results soonish in their UK vaccine study.

Way I see it, if it's safe to go in a restaurant with family then being at their home is not any different, whether you sit at the dining room table at someone's house or at a table at the restaurant the risk is the same. Heck I'd say restaurant is a bit higher because there are more people in general. Just because one is officially allowed or not does not make one safer than the other. In general, use common sense. I would not start making all sorts of plans right now like big family reunions or anything either. But going to see parents or siblings etc is not really a huge deal. We're at a point where we need to just accept that there is always a small risk, can't stay locked down forever.

Of course if you're in a hot spot area then that's different, best to just stay home as much as possible until cases come down. Once you know there is a lot of local transmission is where the risk is much higher.
