Heh... they're probably tired of listening to you gloat about your Tesla stock gains anyway

Here in Connecticut, visiting relatives for Thanksgiving and Christmas is basically cancelled. They aren't letting people travel outside the state without having to quarantine for two weeks or taking a COVID test after you get back.
No one in my real life knows anything about my Tesla holdings or the life changing money I made the past 12 months from Tesla. Well except for my wife, my mom, and my sister. And the only reason my mom and my sister knows is because I also made them very rich by investing their retirement accounts in Tesla as well. And I intend to keep it that way as long as possible. When you win the lottery, you don't want others to know if possible. Keep your mouth shut and continue to live your life as normal but with expanded options.

Pfizer didn't take any R&D money from the government, did it all themselves. The government just wrote a contract for doses if it worked.

The threshold was so low that they were virtually guaranteed to get the money as long as it was better than nothing.

The low threshold made that unlikely though. They didn't need it to be this effective to get the money.

If they discovered even some relatively rare life threatening side effect they'd get bupkis and have to eat the cost unlike Moderna.

I really want to find out if I got the real deal vaccine or not now.

There has been some discussion that government scientists want the phase 3 to run a little longer before telling participants or giving those who got the placebo the actual candidate vaccine. AFAIK Pfizer's position is that it is probably unethical to withhold the information or the vaccine from the placebo group. Not entirely sure this has been resolved yet.

I personally would prefer it runs a bit longer. The more data points to compare the better their info should be. No need to bail at first sign it works, let it run for another months or so. Maybe even give the participants an option with increased compensation to remain part of the trial. Personally I am a bit torn on one hand I am enjoying doing something to help resolve this mess but on the other I am exposed, a lot, and would rather not get sick.

Yeah I think I agree that it should probably run another couple months to bulk up the data.

I wonder how the Canadian vaccine is doing, would be cool if they got somewhere too. But either way I think we will buy whatever comes first. As long as it's not the Chinese one I'm fine with that. The sooner the vaccine is out the better. Even if not everyone gets it at least there will be some basic herd immunity the bring cases down. I personally will want to wait a little to get it but I will eventually want to get it.

Fantastic news all around.

Also, not sure how timing of the announcement makes any difference for a seated president. It's not like he was in the fucking lab or running trials.

Tons of people at my work are testing positive. I think we had like 10 last week and already 2 today. It's looking like we have community spread within the company, so I expect many more positive results in the next few days. We have less than 1,000 employees, so things are not looking good :/

We have a lot of anti-masker Trump people. One of our main security guys didn't believe in the virus or masking, and then he got covid, and then he suddenly retired.

I've been extremely fortunate to work from home. Hopefully I can do that until I have a vaccine in my arm.

The next two months are going to be really rough.

Last test was negative.

I thought there were very few people wearing masks at the West Georgia Flea Market on Saturday, but then I drove a couple hours away to "Mountain Top Flea Market" in Alabama and couldn't believe it was so much worse. You could look at a sea of people and have trouble spotting a single one with a mask. Occasionally you'd see someone wearing a neck gaiter or something but they'd have it pulled down around their neck even when interacting with others. I had probably walked a mile and a half there before finally seeing a woman with a mask but her two children were mask-less... and then her husband or boyfriend or whoever showed up and embraced her without a mask. Their household obviously isn't doing much to slow it even if one person had a mask.

Strangely, when vendors see you wearing a mask at the Georgia flea market you will get harrassed to buy masks. They see you as one of the few potential customers. Only one vendor there seems to be vocally anti-mask and she does not fit the stereotype (minority; not a white Georgian redneck).

Sputnik V was first?

Correct, it was almost all privately funded research (I believe the genesis of the Moderna vaccine was done at NIH), but Trump was always aiming to take full credit if a vaccine EUA dropped before election day. Just like he took credit for the federal stimulus payments in the spring by having his signature printed on the checks.

@CZroe More anecdotal evidence that predictions of a "dark winter" appear to be the likeliest scenario for the U.S.

Are you a US Citizen?
Have you heard the President speak?

That’s it I won’t dip into P&N any further

I have not heard anything about that one being available, or even fully trusted. I would trust it more than the Chinese one given the choice though.
Unless you're one of Vladimir Putin's family members, I was obviously joking. Supposedly, although Russia approved that vaccine many weeks ago, it is finally in phase 3 trial now.

Hopefully in a few weeks Moderna posts results since their vaccine is very similar. 50-60M total doses by year end would be a good start on getting things turned around.

At 12:30 Dr. John Campbell says that the US paid a big chunk of the development costs. Maybe "paid" in the sense that the purchase funded it?

I think the rest is just Trump taking credit for rushing the regulatory side with Operation Warp Speed.

Not in this case. Pfizer partnered with BioNTech (a German company) and funded their own R&D plus trials to get to this point.

They don't get a dime of US government money until they deliver 100M doses after FDA approval/EUA.

I'm kind of on the fence about having my parents visit for the "holidays". It would be for 5-6 weeks up through the new year, with them in the guest bedroom after an isolated 10 hour long drive. We're very much in need of help with our 18 month old toddler, who is becoming very active and needs non-stop supervision. We've kept him out of daycare, but we let him interact with other children at the playground (which would stop with my parents here - they'd become his playmates). Otherwise we do nothing else of risk, so I'm not really sure what the risk level is for us. But all I know is if we don't get some kind of help soon, either I'm leaving work for a few months and may be one-and-done as far as having anymore children goes. It hasn't been a bad experience, but it I'm just both so physically and mentally depleted at this point.

I can't really fault the parents of kids for breaking by this point. People without kids truly have absolutely no idea how much work it is. And I feel like we still have it somewhat easy compared to say, ensuring your 6 or 7 year old is remote learning.
