Sister is a doctor. Yes, they tell everyone to get a flu shot but many in the business don't. They don't because after your get a flu shot your immune system starts fighting all the virus's in the flu shot weakening your immune system. Then if you do catch Covid, your immune system is seriously weakened and not able to fight Covid. Many are not getting the flu shot for this reason.

Probably a stupid thought but i think that's actually a good thing: in many cases, it's the body's immune system "over-response" (citokyne storm or whatever it's called) that makes the situation escalate to a much more serious condition so having a weaker immune system would actually be a good thing, no?

Or is my reasoning flawed?

I wonder how much of this wave came from in-person voting just a week ago.

Judging by the way those attending republican rallies often didn't care about masks and social distancing, it would be a reasonable assumption that they conducted themselves the same way while waiting in line for their turn to vote: as such, it's actually a likely scenario and would explain the explosion of new cases the country is facing in recent days.

This is also couple with halloween right before it. Probably very tough to figure out even with stringent contact tracing.

There is no scientific evidence that I am aware of to support this.

Doctors are not immune to bad information either. Lots of them were downing HCQ at the outset of this thing.

As was stated, there is nothing to support this hypothesis about the immune system at all. Get your damn flu shots.

An immune system reacting too slowly only makes it worse. That's why the viral load of the initial infections is such a huge factor, since the virus can already have an overwhelming foothold before the immune system can fully activate with a high viral load, leading to the body's immune system pulling out all stops (Cytokine Storm, ARDS, etc). An earlier response to shut it down fast or one that ramps along with the infection is better than a later overbearing response.

I don't think having the immune system activate by a flu shot weakens the immune system. If anything, it seems your body would be on high-alert.

Michigan just expanded our shutdown for a period of 3 weeks. Indoor dining, gyms, casinos closed. Their health data showed high school was a much larger exposure point than lower grades so High Schools closed for in person learning now. No more school sports. Hospitals at 80% ICU capacity

We noticed this week that TP supplies were down (Sam's club was out). Couldn't find a few random items at our main grocery (green chilies and black beans). Meat was very sparse at Sam's with more empty spots than filled

My county is a day or two away from spiking its highest rate of new cases ever. Other Arizona counties are already there. Maricopa is climbing but not as bad as last summer.

I'm ready to ride out winter. Lots of streaming, video games and cold calling (for work) from home. Will still go to the grocery store and Costco a few times a month, and some local takeout joints for food at times, but everyone is great with masks here in Northern NJ so I'm not too concerned. I have no expectations to socialize so I guess that makes me mentally prepared.

Sorta corona related, lumber prices are starting to come down again, this is good to see as I really do want to start on my garage shop conversion, I basically have 1 wall to build and then rafters, then I can start to insulate. Hoping to start on that after Christmas.

If you want to travel oversea, these are countries that are still closed to visitors/tourists.

I still think it's ridiculous they are even letting people travel. They are a big part of the problem. When you have a region that is doing well, it only takes one person traveling to change that overnight and cause a bunch of infections. People are selfish assholes. Loosing the "right to travel" is a very small price to pay to be able to get more local freedom.

Most countries are closed and not letting tourist in. Canada is closed. So why are you complaining?

There is still a lot of it going on. In fact they are allowing people in to see their family here if they are sick, yet people who are local are not allowed to be here with their family that is sick.

A lot of the cases in my city - well all of them, are because of people who traveled down south to the GTA and other hot spots. Even local travel needs to be more restricted imo. At very least close off the hot spots.

If they would restrict the movement of people they could then lift lot of restrictions in areas that have no new cases. The restrictions are not TOO bad here, but they could get bad if cases keep going up, which they are. Could have the economy going again if places like restaurants could be fully open etc too.

Went inside Taco Bell for the first time since the lockdown began since I had to use the restroom and we had just locked down the building at work. Remembered that my brother mentioned their lobby had just reopened and they were right across the street.

Felt obligated to order something after using their restroom so I got in line only to see the person in front of me and an employee leaning over opposite sides of the counter to see something on the person's phone. They were practically butting heads, then I watch as the person preparing food used his gloved hand to pull his employer-mandated surgical-style mask down, touching all over his face, nose, and mask... literally grabbing the fabric over his nose directly. He then handled his filthy phone with the same gloves and set the phone down on the food preparation surface while he resumed preparing the food with the same gloves he was wearing the whole time, plunging his hands into the shredded cheese and sprinkling it all in a bare taco shell he was also touching.

F-that ...even when there isn't a pandemic. I pointed it out to the woman ahead of me then turned around and walked out.

I'm not under any delusions that this sort of thing isn't happening constantly when I don't see it (ignorance is bliss) but my first thought is that there literally would have been less cross-contamination with his nose/mask/face if he weren't wearing a mask to mess with in the first place. It's not enough to make employees wear masks for the peace of mind of their customers. You have to make sure they aren't making things worse through idiotic mask-handling.

Even when I do take my surgical-style mask on and off, I do it with the elastic straps because... DUH.

Yup more good news, moderna’s vaccine is close to 95% effective and it doesn’t need to be kept a negative 75C. This means it can work with most existing infrastructure.

Uh huh, suuuure.

"Hey at minimal we gotta report something better than that Pfizer number"

I came here to say the same exact thing.... Literally the only reason I opened the browser and came to ATOT when I saw those numbers...hah!

I know you guys were being sarcastic but read the above link. The moderna vaccine doesn’t need to be kept as cool and there is already infrastructure in place that allows it to be stored.

Moderna is planning to charge $40 per dose so $80 for 2 shots. Seems high when US taxpayers funded the development and study.

Contract with the government is $25 a dose for 100M doses and an option on 400M more at the same price. Smaller buyers will pay more.

Thanks. I hadn't seen that. My biggest concern for rural America was distribution.

I still want to see how many people jump to get vaccines. I had my H1N1 back in 2012 and flu shots every year since 2010. I didn't bother before that because I was in my 20s. Isn't it funny that antivaxers tend to be suburban stupid soccer moms afraid of autism and stubborn farmers in the middle of America that likely vaccinate their own livestock?

The over 60 population of Trump supports is really messing with the covid numbers. There's a selfish stupidity that is laced in stubbornness and denial. Not really sure how else to describe it, but it's the same way people deeply engaged in politics shut down when you ask them to consider the other side of things.

I know a guy that was exposed to COVID last week through his church. He had a high temp for 3 nights (Wednesday-Friday), but continued working (not around many people, but still around clients). He got a rapid swab Friday that came back negative....so he went back to work and church yesterday. He was around my Father in Law on Saturday inside a car for 30 minutes and basically has ruined our Thanksgiving plans because we won't allow him in the house at this point until the quarantine period is over. We've not been to our church since before March. Yesterday, as we watched the beginning of service on Youtube, they were saying, "Please keep these members in your prayers....#NAME# is in the hospital with a lung infection. #NAME# is in the hospital with breathing problems...." They basically named 6 people who definitely have COVID, but they never said COVID once....yet that's why they're on Youtube? It's bonkers out there.
