you should visit a city some time and see all the scary foreigners

There's actually more foreigns here too now than before. Mostly East Indian though, I rarely see Asians but there are some. I think he government actually wants to start bringing more immigrants to the northern cities like here, Thunder Bay etc. I don't really have a problem with it.

They've been trying to get people out of the major cities for a while but people are people and they congregate around familiar surroundings....although even in the smallest remote towns i still see a Chinese restaurants

Two more cities shut down bringing the total to 3. Eighteen million people can't leave.
Police, SWAT teams and paramilitary troops guarded Wuhan's train station, where metal barriers blocked the entrances at 10 a.m. sharp. Only travelers holding tickets for the last trains were allowed to enter, with those booked for later trains being turned away.

Normally bustling streets, shopping malls, restaurants and other public spaces in the city of 11 million people were eerily quiet. In addition to the train station, airport, ferry, subway and bus services were also halted.

Similar measures will take effect from Friday in the nearby cities of Huanggang and Ezhou. Theaters, internet cafes and other entertainment centers were also ordered closed, further increasing the economic costs of the response to the outbreak.

Well these seem like relatively unpleasant developments in the past 24 hours.

Excitement level regarding dropping $250 apiece for Chinese tourist visas given the current uncertainty = nonexistent.

Now couple more cities in China under lock down. I read it's up to 8 cities now but who knows. Supposedly 20 million people effectively quarantined with Chinese New Year events canceled. That's about population of Florida.

I feel for anyone with vacation plans to China right now.

I mean we cant accuse China of not taking it seriously!
I guarantee that you wouldn't get a reaction like that to a seasonal flu outbreak in the West!

I can't tell if this is an overreaction (possibly from perception/pressure from rest of world) or if it's more serious than they're letting on.

I guess what I mean is, it's early, but is the expected contagiousness and mortality rate indicative of epidemic. These new strains always make for good headlines.

Even SARS really didn't kill that many people. I think all of these types of illnesses are overblown. It's the slow rolling ones like HPV or AIDS that really kill a lot of people.

Last I read the mortality rate was about 2% but that was exceedingly early on, probably to early to actually have statistically significant figures. It does appear to be quite virulent though, and China's actions belie their comments, IMHO. They aren't overly concerned with the lives and livelihood of their own citizens based on past actions, but they quarantined several entire cities at this point.

Might be an over abundance of caution, time will tell.

Not so bad. It would be a lot worse to be somebody that had vacation plans to China a week or two ago, they could be infected or trapped there. And speaking of trapped there, the entire country should be on lockdown until they get their shit together. Nobody allowed out until they manage to go 12 months without unleashing a new virus on the world. Enough is enough.

Well, if we had reason to believe that a super bug was involved, there's no predicting the reaction, in the west or anywhere. IIRC the Spanish flu of 1918 killed 50 million people world wide. If we were facing a bug that virulent and dangerous that is highly contagious, unprecedented measures would be justified.

A couple of thousand people have a really bad cold at the moment. How do you think it would go putting Dallas, San Francisco or New York under quarantine?

The video I saw last night on the news makes it look pretty serious. All those Chinese wearing masks. The temperature screenings. I expect all air travel from Wuhan to be stopped, period. Haven't seen today's news yet, but posts here suggest that the sense of imminent problems is not dissipating.

Huh? I had a cold a couple months ago. I wasn't talking about a cold, I was talking about the possibility of a super bug that has a high fatality rate, a high rate of putting people in hospitals and is highly contagious. It's rare but not unimaginable. Has happened, could happen again. Could be a bird flu mutation, for instance.

I live near S.F. If we went under quarantine here, I'd live. I'd be fine. In fact I have food for months here, running water, electricity. I could conceivably hole up for a long time. Cabin fever? I'd probably not go crazy from that.
