How many gun deaths are there annually?
Very few - if you have the sense to be born in a country that doesn't have a gun culture!

Traffic deaths?
Don't drive, do my best to push for cars to be restricted in my city.

Heart Disease?

Cancer?

Stroke?

I do my best with exercise and diet. Though both of those also partially come back to 'cars' above.

Drowning?
When am I ever near a large body of water?

That said, I'm not panicking. It's incredibly-hard to guess what's going to happen at this point. There seems a very good chance that for most of us it will just be a bad cold/bout of flu. But wtf knows really?

Have to say a line in this article really annoyed me.

i.e.
The new claim emerged as the World Health Organization warned that the outbreak was getting bigger and could soon appear in almost every country. The impact risk was now very high at a global level, it said.

“The scenario of the coronavirus reaching multiple countries, if not all countries around the world, is something we have been looking at and warning against since quite a while,” a spokesman said.

I mean - what does that even mean? What it mean to 'look at' that scenario? And what good does 'warning against it' do, sans any ideas for how to stop it?

The flu is actually pretty fucking devastating at an individual case level, and it's an annual thing.
I've wondered for years. How can you tell if you have the flu or have a cold? I've looked it up. The most obvious thing appears to be running a fever. Is that the dividing line? i.e. something over 100F?

You'll have to think back to how they usually affect you personally. For most people Colds are limited to minor cough, stuffy or runny nose, minor fever, generally minor or no aches/nausea, and minimal or no fatigue.

Flu also varies by strain and by person, but generally higher fevers, can have moderate to deep body aches, more severe nausea and moderate to high fatigue and general weakness.

Length of infection seems to vary too dramatically to be a reliable blanket factor, but generally the same person who comes down with a 2-4 day cold will have a flu 2-3x longer.

It's mostly a clinical diagnosis, but that's hardly sensitive. To be most sure, you'd have to get tested, but it's not routinely recommended.

Even if the virus doesn't attack dog cells, there's the potential of the virus surviving in a dogs body and then it goes and licks everything.....
...or exchanges traits with an endemic canine coronavirus and becomes even worse by gaining the ability to spread to dogs and people.

I don't think we can even really compare this to the flu. The flu untreated tends to last a few days or so and does not require hospitalization or anything special. This virus will kill you if untreated. Even healthy people in their 20's are dying from it.

I'm sick as hell right now which means my immune system is down so really trying to avoid the public at this point. I don't think the coronavirus is around where I live though, but better safe than sorry.
Some flus will kill you if left untreated and it seems that a large number of SARS-CoV-2 2019 coronavirus cases will survive without requiring treatment/hospitalization.

Anyway, your symptoms are caused by a functional immune system. When someone claims that they have a strong immune system because they "never get sick" they usually have it exactly backwards. Even worse, they may be asymptomatic carriers of the flu most every fly season:

So, the CFR *hopefully* stays under 1%. However, following Dr John Campbell online, the info he's been getting from inside Iran seems to indicate they have something really aggressive there. Killing healthy 20-30yos in mere days. So the potential is that this is already split into multiple variants. It is an H1N1 base after all, the past versions have done so at times.
Huh? It's not even influenza, so how can it be "H1N1 based?" It is a coronavirus that has a more in common with SARS than any other known coronavirus.

Italian hospitals face an "overcrowding crisis"

Hospitals battling Italy's growing coronavirus outbreak are facing a "crisis," according to health officials in the southern European nation.

Italy now has over 820 cases, making it one of the worst hit countries in the world. Lombardy, in northern Italy, has 531 confirmed cases and a death toll of 17, the region's health secretary Giulio Gallera said Friday.

And hospitals are struggling to cope.

If the (coronavirus) keeps spreading, there will be a crisis of the hospitals, not only for those infected, but for all patients,” Gallera said.

Professor Massimo Galli, head of the department of infectious diseases at Sacco Hospital in Milan, said that some hospitals were already facing an overcrowding crisis.

The strain on health care infrastructure has long been a concern attached to the outbreak. In the Chinese province of Hubei, where the virus is thought to have originated, hospitals were initially unable to cope with the influx of new patients, a situation that is thought to have helped accelerate the spread of the virus during the early stages of the outbreak.

Apologies, I was in a bit of a hurry and didn't elaborate properly.

There is something decidedly odd about this new virus. It is not behaving like past Coronavirus archetypes, primarily in size and mobility/environmental hardiness.

Anyway, yes, it is not the same, nor a variant, it just has some mirrors and some certain operational behaviors that mirror H1N1 specifically.

Someone already posted early this morning (Friday) that Mexico has its first cases of the virus. Thought I'd add what's probably obvious is the thousands who legally cross the border every day.. Edit: Imagine having to somehow screen for the virus at all the legal entry stations along the whole southern border. Anyway here's an ABC News article from today about the two people.

The way I see it at the moment, though, is that the virus seems to have taken hold within the recipient-countries for refugees/migrants before it has done so in the poorer countries they come from. It's running rampant in Italy more than it is in Africa, and despite it spreading from Iran across the middle-east, it hasn't yet, apparently, gotten a grip on the refugee camps in the region.

Likewise the US already has at least as many cases as Mexico does and south America in general is clearly late to the party.

So, fortunately, migrants from poorer countries are not currently a vector for spreading this. It's more the reverse - so far it seems it's being spread to poorer countries from richer ones. And the main source of the cases here so far are posh folk going on skiing holidays and business trips. I'll end up getting bourgeois corona virus bought in by one of those guys.

A 100 million dead is certainly within the realm of worst case scenarios. After all, that is only 2% of 5 billion people. It may not be all directly due to the dying from the virus itself, but the poverty and lack of quality medical care resulting from a pandemic can kill A LOT of people.

CNN was absolutely terrible at highlighting important coronavirus developments until the stock market started tanking. Same goes for Fox News and most other US media.
Where did you get 5 billion? It's almost 8B

I don't think he's expecting everyone to contract the virus.

Ahh, thanks. If there were mortuary futures I'd buy in right about now, well if I had money.

I haven't looked but I imagine there are Vegas odds for this.

i just work through it. my chest hurts almost all the time, and stomach and headaches come and go. people at work keep asking me if i'm OK and i tell them i'm fine. doctors didn't find any major problems though so maybe it's just me going crazy.

i'm actually sitting here trying to finish a few hours of work stuff today so i am caught up for monday morning. otherwise i'll just need to work late again.

The CDC sent a NYC man without testing: Link.
Here's his story on Reddit too.

I don't know what's more scary at this point, the virus itself or the inability of our higher ups to handle this or cover things up. They could at least admit being backlogged on test kits and saving them for more extreme cases, but yet across the country it seems like there are people such as those in WA confirmed with minor symptoms...

You're nuts man. Switch jobs, switch employers or switch industries. I took that kind of crap for ~5 years with accounting firms. Never again.

I have a manager that actually tells me to take my vacation instead of giving dirty looks and having approval processes for that kind of shit.

I did see a television news report( interview with some infectious disease doctor) that one of the first batches of covid-19 test kits are essentially useless due to one of the testing reagents being improperly formulated.
