what seriously? i was told that getting to 105 would cause seizures and brain scarring, at least if you are young
AFAIK, I've never had a fever over 103F. I don't recall having one over 101 for some ~20 years. When I get sick I often take my temperature if I'm feeling feverish but 90+% of the time I'm below 99.5%. Usually below 98.6F.

Same here. Shooting for an early retirement but healthcare is my largest unknown.
I'll have 30 years saving at the age of 52 (12 years away)... hoping to be debt free pretty soon so I can max everything and save some real money... I'm sure any losses over this will level out by then and I'll be scaling back risk the decade after that since I'll have 15 years to kill before social security kicks in.

You think SS will be around for you in 27 years? You optimist you!

I don't even include SS in my retirement calculator spreadsheet.

Without SS the economy and government would collapse.... it also seems that this thread is starting to derail.

I've got SS. It's not a lot, I am getting a lot less than the average, but it is helping. Because I'm he king of frugal. I can stretch a dollar farther than the valley between mountain ranges. So thin you can't see it. I was once so poor ... I mean I was broke... except I had $2. I refused to spend that $2. It was in my pocket for IIRC 2 weeks, because I didn't want to be literally penniless. Didn't spend a penny for those 2 weeks. Then I got some money somewhere, don't remember the details. Long time ago, but I haven't forgotten how to squeeze a dollar until that eagle grins. I do not believe in the concept of disposable income.

Back on topic - panic buying leaving the shelves empty and the US could be out of supplies by April if oversea suppliers are not up and running - https://finance.yahoo.com/news/coronavirus-fears-empty-store-shelves-035137885.html
Hmm, toilet paper. Well, if I run out I have quite a few rolls of blue shop towels I can cut up with my paper cutter and use as toilet paper. I'm hitting Costco Monday when I get home. Don't know what to expect. Guess I should have hit them Thursday, didn't occur to me then. Things are developing fast.

Every possession is disposable. There is definitely a time to cast away stones.
You see had you read what was posted you would have seen we were talking about money......
There is a huge difference between money and possessions!

i just want to retire. if healthcare wasn't such a large variable cost in the US, i could pull it off.

If a job causes you constant chest pains, headaches, loss of sleep, etc, you leave it. Period. I’ve left jobs for less and my current job is starting to get that way so I’m looking around. I work too much and I’m done with it.

I occasionally read the FIRE Reddit, and it seems like those who cannot figure out how to make best of their journey to retirement do not end up enjoying it, and end up back in work aimless and depressed. You always hear that it's never the destination that matters, but how you get there...

I think it stems from telling parents to see a doctor if their newborn has temperature of like 101 or something, they only do this to ensure they are not infected with something life threatening, not because the fever itself is dangerous.

Exactly. It’s like I’ve told people on AT many times - why put up with terrible conditions, working 50+ hours per week, and saving every dime you make for a retirement which may never come? It’s an insane and terrible thought process. I can work longer to make money for retirement; I can’t, however, get all those lost years back.

Big 3 US airlines are cutting back routes to other cities in Asia beside mainland china - https://news.yahoo.com/3-us-airlines-canceling-flights-183059356.html

Very soon will be layoffs and cuts across the board. More domino effect.

Good news about this virus, a lot less pollution in china - https://news.yahoo.com/coronavirus-map-china-pollution-190523927.html

Layoffs? Maybe stopping work/pay for a while, but I figure once the scare dies down they would have to quickly ramp up production again?

That is really one of the biggest problems in our economy are 2 types of people:

1) People who spend little bits of money every-day. My Mother in law is a perfect example of this... Buy soda's in a check-out line. Uses vending machines. $0.50 here. $1.50 there. $2.00 snack there.... at the end of the month I've seen her bank statement and it's just a laundry list of low dollar spending combined with some high dollar. People that do the whole "Starbucks everyday" are the same.

2) People that are always trying to catch-up with the Jones' Need new shoes because... reasons.... need a new car because... my old one doesn't smell new anymore and my neighbor got a cool one.

Living frugally isn't a matter of starving yourself or depriving yourself of joy.... It's a matter of learning to find joy without needing the most expensive item.
