Yeah from what I keep reading masks are more to stop you from spreading it. Really the best way to avoid getting sick is to just try to limit public exposure as much as possible. Grocery stores are probably a bad place too because everyone needs to go at some point to buy food, and lot of food will have the virus on it from airborne particles etc, then you eat the food. I'm not sure if even washing fruit etc is enough, it's near impossible to get it to a sterile state. Maybe install a UVC light in your fridge? lol.

In the end I think this will just be something like measles or polio, where you just need to make sure to be vaccinated, once that's available.

I bought an ozone generator back in December. That will kill viruses in seconds at a concentrations of .4 ppm... It makes me sad my garage is 900 square feet with 10 foot ceilings...I'd have to generate a lot of gas in there to make it a quarantine/clean room.

Nothing a mini-greenhouse couldn't fix.
Throw a bed and an extension cord in there and you'd have a decent quarantine cell. Might need to get some kind of air movement though.

I got a $400 industrial unit for $50 at Goodwill... new in the box. Thing is, you don't want to breathe it.

If I bought that, my wife would have it full of plants minutes after I assembled it. She's got like 16 linear feet of grow lights going right now in our dining room on shelves... I'm not sure how much money she spent on all that equipment for seed starting, but it seriously looks like a greenhouse in there already. She loaded my truck down with 2400lbs of compost last Thursday...not sure I'll ever get it clean again.

All of the $400 industrial units are $50 on eBay... I paid $45 with free shipping for mine after sending offers to all the people selling them. They all look the same...just different name brands.

My plan of attack at this point is I'm relatively young and relatively healthy so I'm just going to flex on Coronavirus and take it on. That way if it comes around again when I'm old I will be immune.

Don't put that on my tombstone if it kills me though

If fitted correctly. And if you know how to decon correctly. And if nobody sneezes in your face, such that it gets in your eyes (unless you're cognizant enough to be wearing eye protection as well).

Cosplaying as Darth Vader would help though, right?

just want to add a product for those thinking of buying hand sanitizer.. A product called hibiclens. It is a germicidal soap that actually is supposed to be effective for quite some time after you wash with it as the active ingredient is supposed to somewhat bond to the skin. I purhased a quart a couple days ago and poured it into an empty foaming hand soap pump bottle. It actually foams and cleans quite nicely. I actually like it enough that I am awaiting a 2nd order to arrive.

For the price I will just use my left over bottle of bacardi 151

We should have an AT meet/COVID-19 inoculation party!

So anyone think it's an overreaction that today three schools were closed in New York state because of the virus? A father of one of the students at one of the schools has the coronavirus. So does anyone think the schools should remain open if the man only has mild symptoms? And that's it's hyped fear tactics to close the three schools?

That's not a political question imo. It's a normal question for this thread as these reactions to the emergency are to be expected. I can provide a link about the school closings if anyone needs it, the story came out a few hours ago. But it's a top or near top story in main news so it's hard to miss.

Edit: ok I see that yesterday some schools in Washington state closed at least temporarily due to the virus. So that probably got posted about earlier in the thread.

That's a typo. Meant to type $300 but I just looked it up on eBay and I dunno....

I got it a couple years ago and I had actually spent months shopping for the best deal on eBay. Still have some in my watch list. Anyway, I wanted it for experimentation with yellowed ABS plastics and never saw anything close to this. Was about to pull the trigger on some $30 garbage one when I found this locally. Really lucked out!

This was a giant, heavy, steel box with gauges and fittings galore while the $30 unit was some plastic thing that looked cheap even for a kitchen appliance. This thing looks like it belongs in an elevator equipment room or a welding shop or something.

Hmm. Link isn't working for me but this is what I got...

Not quite "industrial" (those look like refrigerators) but definitely more than a typical $50 jobbie.

Edit: Manually forced the URL in Chrome to keep the app from hijacking/breaking it. Yeah, those are the kind that vent directly into the room where they operate. I see them used in restoration and remediation (sewage backup, bat infestation, etc). I consider them "commercial grade" but distinct from this thing. I definitely needed the hoses for my intended purposes.

Yeah... Funny, it's obvious that they generate ozone....but it's hard to say how much. It's also tough to say how effective or safe it is. I did research because I'm wanting to use mine to remove mold and mildew smells from upholstry and use it to treat my crawlspace for kicks. I've just not gone down there yet when we're not planning on being home. I've also been reluctant to set it up without turning off the gas at the meter. I read that Ozone and O3 generators can be a combustion hazard if there are other fuels present....especially since they generate sparks while they're running. Perhaps, I'll run it outside and pipe it in through a vent one day?

Sounds like me! I've got less grow lights, but did a buttload of work in the garden last year.

Yeah, I'd probably have one full of plants instantly too.

That's not THAT many growlights. They're just 4' long T5 LEDs X 4....on 2 shelves. I've been pretty impressed at how well the seeds started and once she added some fertilizer, they really jumped. The T5 fixtures are on cables so we can raise or lower them based on the height of the plants. I keep trying to convince her that 1-2' above the plants is sufficient, but she keeps putting them right on top of the plants and raising them. (I mean, light travels pretty fast and far)

Unlike China, I believe the overall consensus in western governments is to let the pandemic sweep through the population. Of course, no one in government who takes this position will admit this, so you'll see half-hearted attempts to contain the virus for politicians to save face, reduce public panic, and spread out the case load to help the hospitals a bit.

Schools with coronavirus cases should be closed for at least 14-days with all teachers, staff and students being told to self-quarantine, if schools and governments were serious about preventing the spread of this virus. I believe many schools will struggle to get the full school year in, at least without resorting to study-from-home virtual classrooms. Many graduation ceremonies might be cancelled as events with large groups of people may be banned to slow the spread of the virus.

My kids were planning to start college this fall. It may not happen this year based on all of the chaos that may be ahead.

A big company today significantly upped the number of employees sent home to work from home. It's 10% of the JP Morgan Chase work force, maybe that will go up.

According to this story Spain confirms its first coronavirus death after reviewing the medical history of a patient. It occurred all the way back on February 13th, so it has been spreading undetected in Spain for weeks.
Same for the US. My estimation is that a large number of Chinese people traveled into China and back out again for the Chinese new year. Those that have the means are business owners who run restaurants and nail salons, massage parlors, etc. There are more Chinese restaurants in the continental US than McDonald's.

Making a point that there's potential with the underground labor networks to have been bringing people into the country for the past few months undetected. Depending on when it actually started up, the virus has been in the wild longer than anyone will admit.

Just buckle up and stay healthy. Drink lots of fluids (not from a public water fountain) and try to weather the storm that's sure to be ahead.
