But not even hospitals have been able to get enough masks. Wouldn't advising everyone to start wearing them only exasperate the supply issue?
There was a longish article in the NYTimes a few days ago arguing that they should have been up front with the American public all along on the mask issues instead of the misinformation campaign that we've seen until now. Anyone with brains who saw the millions in China, SK, etc. wearing masks knew that they weren't doing that because they were superstitious. Masks may not prevent you from becoming infected with reliability but they absolutely majorly lower the curve.

They could have said please don't dent the N95 supply because they are urgently needed for the health care system itself. They're saying that now, but could have said it in February and March, but wear something!

I've come to accept that social pressure & embarrassment are two of the strong human emotions out there that drive human behavior. And yet they're largely super invisible from the outside.
Yeah, I'm still struggling some because I have N95's that I bought in 2017 and 2018 to wear when wildfires rage around here. Should I wear them or give them to a hospital? Well, they're all I have, I am at risk, I didn't dent the supply since this outbreak. I have given 13 of them away to family and friends, have over 20 left. I don't discard them, I reuse them. My HMO has been less than generous and honest with me and I pay them monthly for, well, just being there. I can't even go now for my issues. Figure I should look after myself and not feel guilty because they aren't prepared. The ugly fact is if I need to go there for ICU in a few weeks, if I need a ventilator they're probably gonna say, "sorry, yours goes to someone more likely to survive based on our metrics. It was nice knowing you."

Note the wording: "cloth face coverings"
They want us to improvise.

Surprised nobody is buying into the UV light sanitizers... granted, a lot of them seem pricey.

But hey, we're building a wall... Still right?

Well, since I've been told that alcohol is not good for N95 masks (thanks, brianhulk) I've been considering using my $600 ozone generator or my UV lamps. I have one UV lamps for dealing with mold under a shed and another for erasing EEPROMs.

They first discouraged Americans back in January. That's when we got that CNN misfire where they wrongly attributed Daigou purchases for China to Americans panic-buying.

You have to remember you're playing your part by not getting sick, infecting others and putting more strain on the hospitals. You're also sharing them with friends and family which helps even more. As long as you're not sitting on 50 or more I wouldn't blame you. Who knows how long this thing is going to last.

just tell them you had the mask from way back when you were doing some construction projects, and youve been wearing it for a month straight because thats all you have.
I got mine in January in Thailand (given to me by a friend). I am still reusing it because it's better than nothing. Hopefully people don't assume I deprived a medical worker when I wear it.

Yup. They interviewed a doctor in NY last night on the news. He said "be a victor, not a vector!"

I just went grocery shopping with an N95 mask on. I did not realize how hard it is to breathe in one. I was feeling out of breathe because it restricts the airflow. And then it gets hot as hell. My nose started running because I was hot in there too and it just got so uncomfortable. I did shopping for my mom and my family though so I was there longer than usual, but I think from now on I'll rock it when I shop. Might as well since I have one.

So I've been thinking about this myself. I traveled for work + a side-trip with my family in early-mid February.... And mind you, this was to Orlando... which is home to TONS of travelers for Disney and shit... that along with just staying at a hotel and being at a conference with lots of other people... PLUS being on the crowded flights.

Suffice it to say, we came out with a sickness afterwards... My wife got sick... my infant got sick... my toddler got sick... everyone except me.... I had no symptoms, so I'm guessing my immune system fought it off...

But either way, it was deemed by the doctor as RSV at the time, which is damn near the same as COVID-19... Wondering if we got infected with it already....

Either way, probably too lazy to seek out an anti-body test unless they become much easier to access.

Not only the surgical masks, let alone the N95s, are not available at decent price in stores or online, the bandannas are not too. I order 6 bandannas (full size that cover all around from the neck up to the ears) from Amazon to fight air pollution when I was in developing countries a few months ago, around September/October of 2019. Now I check from the same link and they are all not available, not at any price. This is unreal.

Time to learn how to sew and cut fabric, guys.

Grocery stores are saying they are not bagging items anymore and you have to do it yourself. Except the cashier put their hands on every item when scanning the barcode.

Why not make everything self check out?

I was in a difficult dilemma during my February 16 connecting flight from Istanbul to Atlanta (12.5 hours). The Indian man next to me was coughing his lungs out the entire time and not even trying to cover his face. I put on the N95 mask before I sat down next to him. Many hours later, wearing the mask was unbelievably uncomfortable. The accumulated humidity was making it more difficult for me to breathe. The sounds I was making probably made other people think I was sick. Eventually it became unbearable. I had to remove my mask. I would put it on again each time the guy started another coughing fit. Still it seems like he never even considered covering his face.

Jessa Jones pointed out this tweet. She has a PHD in molecular biology. These cheap Chinese tests are inaccurate and are likely a complete scam.

That said, I couldn't finish the video because she makes a lot of incorrect assumptions about the numbers and the timeline of the spread.

I always do self checkout when it's available. It's so much faster to get in a line for 6-8 stations instead of lining-up behind just 1 cashier, even when the line *appears* to be longer. Someone sent me to Publix and I was surprised to see there was no self checkout. Bizarre.

@purbeast0. Gotta go for Ma tomorrow. We'll see what the masses look like on the 1at of the month.
I actually have to go back tomorrow morning too. I didn't get any produce for either of us because my cart was full to the brim as was underneath, and I was just uncomfortable as hell with that thing on so I just said screw it I'll go tomorrow morning.

It's weird though with the mask on I felt like people give you more room lol, and I also felt invincible like I had nothing to worry about with it on. Probably not a good thing to feel that way in the latter.

Remember they got stocked on the shelves by someone and were probably touched many times by other customers before you got it....

Self checkout was open when I was there today but I had a full fucking cart and had no produce so everything had a barcode. It wuold have been a huge pain in the ass to do that myself, plus only like 1/3 of my stuff would have fit on the 'bagging area' that has the scale, so it would have kept telling me that my stuff wasn't bagged after I scanned and then need the cashier to override it. Would have been too much of a PITA.

Seems like Japan is finally breaking out. It will be interesting to see how they handle things over there and how they will get things under control.

The newest Publix near me opened six weeks ago and they have self-checkout lines. But the plethora of others around me do not.

"200,000"

Da...

...fuq?!
Something smells rotten in Denmark. Um, I mean China. They have reported officially something like 3000 deaths. Now they order 200,000 body bags? I presume those have nothing to do with the probably hundreds of thousands of cremated Chinese during the initial Wuhan outbreak. I said it before... I think the actual death toll in China is in 7 figures.

The Chinese rulers know full well that the world will condemn them roundly for having blown the chance to quell the epidemic in the early stages. So, they decided that misinformation is the only way to respond. They will never stop lying about this.
