I taught in South Korea. Many of my students wore masks. It's actually quite fashinable in Asia.

Same with fake braces in Thailand. All of the girls there had braces, and I had no idea why. It's actually shows that you have money since braces are expensive, and it's fashionable as well. And can be deadly. Sadly.

i think drinking and driving is OK. it says right on the back of your license how many drinks per hour you can have if you dont like the smoke you can move your location right? i mean i think its inconsiderate to blow smoke on someone but pretty sure you can smoke in public and be OK. it would be more annoying if someone blew it into your house like smoking outside your open window and i think it might be illegal not sure tho.

btw braces are HOT! so are straight teeth SUPER HOT!

I know - just noting that they have 'exhausted or despairing nurse collapses in hospital corridor'. Ready for all your pandemic stories. If only governments were as prepared as stock photo libraries.

Meanwhile in Germany, undue hardship because of the virus -

Hard time for all the dancers and strippers in clubs around the US. No more lap dances = no money. Poor girls.

It's kind of eye opening to see how different neighboring counties are treating this pandemic right now.

I went to a Walmart that was a county over from me, a 30 minute drive, because I wanted to get 2 specific toys for my son for Easter that only that one had in stock. The only other Walmart near me in my county is also like 25-30 minutes away anyways. And I needed eggs and some cleaning stuff too so thought I could grab it there.

On my drive there once I got into the other county I noticed how many more cars were on the road. Then I got to Walmart and the parking lot was packed. There were no people working outside that were doing crowd control or anything, both entrances were open to just walk into. I also noticed that I'd say like 10 or 20 percent of people had masks on. I could not believe how crowded it was there too. I don't go to Walmart very often but it seemed like a normal day to me. Thankfully the toy section was really empty and I just got his toys and got out of there. I had my N95 mask on and didn't really get close to anyone since the self checkout on that side of the store was empty.

Then on the way home I went to my local grocery store that I've been going to and the parking lot was the most empty I have seen it since this all started. I went in and got my eggs and cleaning products and was on my way.

Kind of crazy to see such a drastic difference just 30 minutes away.

I'm thinking you could probably use the oven to speed up disinfection too. I don't know if full heat required to kill the virus would be too much, but even if you put it at like 50C or something then set it aside. Probably have a decent chance at making sure it's safe by the time you go to use it.

I'm sure at some point we'll see more studies on various ways to disinfect them as hospitals are going to be forced to do it.

I am really getting sick of the dumb fucks that think exceptions apply for religious purposes.

Go do your circle-jerk dancing, book reading rituals all you want. No one is preventing you from freely having your religion.

Where in our founding documents did it say thou shalt have freedom of religion... and the ability to gather with others of your religion at any time?
Tell it to the Roberts court.

Common theme I'm starting to read in multiple stories as the virus hits small town and rural areas: They thought this was a big city only disease.

The idea (implied or otherwise) that small town values, relative remoteness, and some sense of good old country know how was going to keep this out is as disappointing as it is predictable. The hammer has yet to really come down on these parts of America but be assured it's on the way.
Dumb to think(not aimed at you -K1052) small towns won't be affected. It's just going to take longer to get there, in most instances.

I live in rural PA, as of today we have 8 or 9 cases in the county. It's coming, just slower than in more populated cities.

but did you have goggles on? seems silly to go to walmart for a toy, you dont try and do weeks worth of shopping at once at non peak hours?

I kept my sun glasses on.

I guess you missed the part where I went for more than just the toy. I already have a house full of groceries, but we didn't get enough eggs since we're dying them, and we needed more cleaning stuff.

Out of the $300 I spent last weekend, I forgot a few things. Who woulda thought.

seems foolish to only wear sunglasses when you know it can be transmitted through your eyes (you criticized everyone else for no mask etc) . sure i read that you bought eggs and cleaning supplies, i usually buy 15 dozen at a time its something that is hard to forget to buy. 300 sounds at most like a weeks worth of food.

I'd probably be a good candidate for antibody testing.

I had the worst respiratory illness of my life back in December that had me go to the doctor for x-rays where the official diagnosis became "inflammation of bronchial tubes" (bronchitis) caused by an unknown viral illness. They told me to keep a close eye for trouble breathing and fever for potential pneumonia. It ended up resolving on its own but it took a long time, and prior to that I had symptoms of a normal flu (stuffed nasals, fever, etc) before all of those dropped out and the lungs/cough just lingered. Honestly the thought of it developing into pneumonia didn't even cross my mind even after the diagnosis. While I did have shortness of breath, it never got so bad that I couldn't walk - it actually did me better to be somewhat active. I did have a measured decrease in lung capacity at the doctor's, but again nothing that required urgent care of some sort.

I've already contacted my doctor about this so we'll see. Maybe a weaker strain was already circulating the population before things got bad in Wuhan and then the rest of the world?

Different constitution.
Different laws.
Different society.
Different culture.
Also more homogeneity. The multifarious, multi-racial, extreme diversity of the USA makes it harder to come to agreement. We have a goddamn tradition developing in the USA of contentiousness, us versus them. It's hard to get anything done when you are always suspicious of the other side, other subcultures. That must be much less of an issue in S. Korea.

NO, I haven't been there but I have a good imagination, which is more than can be said for a great many much more traveled people. I also have a much smaller carbon footprint than them, something of which I can be justifiably proud.

Did you have a negative flu test?

That doesn't mean you have the right to gather wherever you want, whenever you want, with whomever you want.

About that:

You would have to argue that their assemblies are somehow not peaceful, which you MIGHT be able to do if you can show significant risk of the spread of disease. Legally it's an interesting conflict.

That's interesting. Exposure rates are still that low in Oregon? Who'd a thunk it. Also the idea that antibodies from other respiratory coronaviruses might protect against Covid-19 is particularly interesting. Time to inoculate people with the common cold? Just . . . not the rhinovirus version of it.

Yup, that came back negative and that's why I ended up getting the x-rays. From there they were just like, "we don't know what it is here's an inhaler, some other prescriptions, and let us know if it gets worse".

I'm not hopeful on it having been COVID though. But I figure if they're going to do antibody testing, they should start with those who had ILI (unidentified influenza-like illness) along with other symptoms that match COVID. Supposedly it was a "high year" for ILI.
