In fact, AMD64 CPUs outperform the Pentium 4 in gaming, so I definitely don't think you should limit your AMD64 use to servers.

Also, only the Athlon 64 FX line is multiplier unlocked which is a must for overclockers like me. The Athlon 64 non-FX line is multiplier locked.

To the OP: if you want to overclock, you can still overclock a regular A64 easily. Unless you've got money to burn, I don't think unlocked multipliers is worth the multiple hundreds of dollars the FX line includes.

Judging by your XP/Sempron thread though, I think all of this FX talk is probably out of your budget (and mine too).

The 64 archetecture will run any popular PC OS. The Athlon 64 is the standard/value desktop version, the FX is the preformance/premium desktop version, and the Opteron is the server version. They are all largely identical except for the minor features mentioned above and the memory controllers (socket 754=single channel DDR; socket 939=dual channel DDR; socket 940=dual channel registered DDR).

64 bit AMD Operon processors are designed for the servers.

64 bit AMD Athlon Processors are designed for the desktop market.

The higher end 64 bit Athlon Processors and Opterons are also targeted at the Workstation market.

AMD has also been coming out with a new low power consumption Processor for the Mobile processor market for laptops.

yeah this is a pretty noob question, haha.

anyways, the Athlon 64's are 32-bit AND 64-bit. They are not server chips. They are your basic desktop chips (and usually cost less than their Pentium 4 counterparts).

Operaton is AMD's server chip line

The only time I ever called microsoft tech support was to get the cd key on my office xp ($35 from my school) reactivated because I didn't uninstall it before I reformatted and the call went without a hitch .

I've never called them for anything from my home...but I work for my university for Computing services...and we have them on fricken speed dial. With each new update brings boat loads of new problems.

not exactly true. The FX line us unlocked, yes, but the non-FX is upward locked. Meaning, if you buy an Athlon 64 that runs at 2.0Ghz, you can't set your multiplier higher than 10, (10x200=2GHz). But, you can drop the multiplier down, which is frankly all you need for Overclocking the A64. With a decent mobo and memory, if you start by cranking up the main bus speed, you'll max out your processor before anything else.

I was not aware you can lower the multiplier with the A64's, thats kinda cool.

As for MS Hardware I have no problems, I LOVE my old intellimouse optical and others seem to like the xbox... Their software on the other hand... well... it works most of the time.

You can lower the multiplier because of Cool N' Quiet ( the A64 proccessor will drop to 800mzh when Idle, then to 1.8ghz and finally back to full speed depending on CPU usage )
