I just picked up my Nook Color tonight, and upon turning it on for the first time I noticed a dead pixel near the middle of the screen. I'm afraid it might drive me crazy--but I get along fine with smartphone screens that are smudged to hell. I'm fearful of exchanging it only to find the next one is worse. Should I try to return it?

If the next one is worse, then return it or get your money back. Not really sure why you're asking what to do.

You're not happy with your purchase, so return/exchange your nook until you are happy.

Definately return it. B&N are pretty good with tech support, at least in my experience. I'm loving my Color. I bought the extended warranty for situations like that for later. Dead pixels irk the shit out of me.

I'd have been fine with a single dead pixel in an unobtrusive spot, but near dead center was going to bother me. I'd been a little worried they wouldn't do a return for a single pixel--Apple's iPad policy is 2 dead pixels minimum, if you can believe the leaked documents. Returned it today for a new unit that has a flawless screen. Very impressed with the no-hassle return--I was in and out in under ten minutes while the store was very, very busy. Seems like a great device out of the box with a lot of potential for growth.

Not to thread necromancy - but I just recently got the Nook Color as a gift and it came with a dead pixel.

Went to my nearest B&N store and exchanged it. Examined that one on the spot and it TOO had another dead pixel.

Exchanged that one (to the digust of the store manager - who was about ready to refund my money at this point) finally got a clean error free Nook Color.

$249.99 for a light weight portable tablet / manga / e-zine reader is good enough in my book. I didn't think I would get much use of this item (having dozens of netbooks myself) but it's kinda nice. If this had a 3G service for a monthly fee - I would of been harping about it all across multiple internet message boards. Free Wi-Fi at any B&N is decent enough.

If anyone has any questions about the unit - feel free to ask.

How does it fair as an e-book reader? I played around for a day with my friend's Kindle 3G and I am getting more sold on buying a Kindle despite their lack of ePub support. But I am still curious about the new Nook despite the fact that it is an LCD screen

I was interested in getting one, but after playing around with it, I think I might go with the older black and white Nook. The new one looks nice and the magazines in color look cool, but I'd rather have an e-ink screen on a reading device.

Returning things from online stores is so easy these days I wouldn't settle until the Nook is perfect. You shouldn't have to pay $200+ for something that isn't perfect so return it to them. Just my 2cents.

isn't that a little slow? I mean compared to the ipad, the touch screen is a bit sluggish...

Woot, finally got color nook rooted and figured out how to sideload apps...

It took you this long? I had mine rooted in the first 15 seconds of turning it on! There's instructions on how to enable Market access on XDA.

It's not sluggish, I'm running the TV.com app, no stutters or problems...

It is a tick or two behind the iPad as far as speed, but it's very useable...
