Bad deal. The bigger nook can be had for at $110 or less refurb 32GB which is way way better.

I think it's kinda okay-ish. Meaning I don't know of anything better at that price. The bigger HD+ 32GB will set you back $180 usually (that $110 refurb deal from eBay seems dead now).

It's got a nice 1440x900 resolution display, an SD slot, and Google Play.

Though for $99 there are some downsides. The 8GB of storage is a big one. I'm guessing it probably has 5GB of usable space. While it has an SD slot, you still need to install most apps tot he internal storage, so you may be limited on how many apps you can install. If you aren't installing big games, you could probably fit a bunch of things on there.

The TI OMAP 4470 was slow when this tablet was new last year. So it'll be some what performance limited.

I'm still not a big fan of tablets under the $200 price range. Staples has $50 off tablet coupons often, which brings tablets like the Nexus 7 down to $180 (which was just last week so that deal is probably over now). But I do see the Nexus 7 at $200 right now. I think the extra $100 would be well worth it to get a Nexus 7 over the Nook HD.

Actually its a great tablet bargain, when you can get it for $69. $99 is more than I'd pay though its pretty close to Christmas to expect a great bargain.

I don't notice anything slow about my granddaughters, it plays all the games she wants to just fine. And it's got a very nice screen.

Just sent mine back. Nice reader, crappy tablet. Save up for a Nexus 7, you'll be happier.

They're ok, but laggy, dunno if you'll like using it 6 months from now.

The nook HD+ has been ~$110 recently, I'd at least hold out for the bigger one.

I think you guys are talking about used and refurbished prices. I don't think I've seen a new HD+ or HD at these low prices mentioned. Not saying anything is wrong with used/refurb, but it's not new either. And $99 for new I think is a good price still.

Also if it's a Christmas gift, not a lot of shopping days left to keep waiting for a better deal to come along.

It's not a crappy tablet. It's very well made and works at least as well as the 2012 Nexus 7 but with a better screen and sound.

It's not as great as the 2013 Nexus 7, but that doesn't make it crap.

And, the battery doesn't go dead in a couple of days when not in use, something I wish my 2013 Nexus 7 would do.

It also has an sd card slot and can do hdmi out, making it potentially better as a movie player. It also is fine for Youtube, web-browsing and gaming. And for checking email, calendar, maps.

It's silly to call it crap.

I like the interface OK, but it lags online (and I have a strong wireless network), has no GPS (so it's useless on the road), and its version of the Play Store does not carry the same selection of apps you'd find on a 'real" Android tablet. Therefore, crappy (IMO). Why do you think B&N is going out of the tablet business? Because they've done such a stellar job and are keeping pace with the big boys?

Bought 3 today. Are they the best tablet? No. Are they a very good tablet at that price point? I think it will be; we'll see.

I read very mixed reviews for the lower tier tablets. For me this was the sweet spot, quality build, good resolution, and performance solid enough to keep my kids happy.

It's made a lot better by loading Cm 10.1 or 10.2. Its not totally bug free but the performance is good and AOSP UI is much better than the stock software. Luckily, Barnes and Noble made it pretty convenient to load different software. It will basically just boot off a microsd card. But you will get better performance flashing to the internal EMMC.
