<irrational brand-hater> I blame IBM! </irrational brand-hater>

But seriously, my condolences for your loss, and hopefully you have backups of everything.

mine has been making the high pitched whining noise for a long time now. I put them inside these SmartDrive 2002 enclosures to keep them quiet. The enclosures feel pretty warm->hot usually. dunno what the temps are for sure but I am not taking them out because the sound is unbearable.

This eclosure is impressive though, that its able to dissapate so much heat, but this summer we'll see once and for all if the drive will last.
I cant really sell them, because of the noise. If they die, I am gonna have to look for a good deal on some seagates.

What kind of click did you get. I have one computer which gives a single click evey now and then. I think it's coming from the box. I have no idea what it is. Other wise it runs fine.

Seeing as how the 120 GB drives have only been on the market for 1.5 years, and you'd have had to go out of your way to buy one that didn't have a 3 year warranty, I would assume it is.

If you had important info on there, try the Novell Trick before RMA'ing it. I was able to get a 20 minute window on a supposedly dead drive to pull off everything but my MP3's and porn before the thing died for good.

The freezer trick is sometimes called the Novell Trick, because as far as techs have been able to figure it out, some genius at Novell was the one who first discovered it.

Hmmm, I would love to know what lengths this guy went to or at least what persuaded him to try that

I can just see Mr. X walking past a bunch of colleagues in the staff room over to the freezer with a WD Hard Drive.

Perhaps he was trying to cool it down or something? Maybe he thought the problem was overheating ?

Hmm

All HDs fail. They are mechanical devices. I've had some Maxtors fail, IBMs...never a WD. OTOH I'm sure one will sooner or later.

I'm saddened by your loss but try and keep your spirits up for the RMA.

Thats really too bad. I can't believe Western Digital is having troubles. As far as drives dying 'sooner or later'...well i'm waiting for some to die...just to see, I pulled out some old Western Digital Harddrives and put them in an old old 486 computer and they worked great. I think they were in use every day from 1992 - 1997 and here and there until it was retired for good in 2001...well one was bought somewhere inbetween 1992 and 1997 but the original is a western digital and it still works . Amazing...but I had switched to 2 Maxtor drives (30.7Gb and 7Gb one) and they were great. Now I am using an 80Gb Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 and I highly recommend it...barely makes noise, is fast and quite reliable and I think I will be sticking with Seagate from now on.

I guess I'm just jinxed with buying good HDs eh?

That high-pitched sound the WDs make, is it loud and obvious? I think my 80gb is making that noise but I'm not sure, it's not all the time and when I hear it it's very low.
