Wow, I can't think of many things that's as fustrating as losing an essay and having to rewrite it. First off, you always feel as if it will never be as good as the first, and secondly you're all PO'd while doing it over again just thinking about how much it sucks you have to write it all over again.

I don't know what happens when you save a word document after opening it from an e-mail, but I've done everything I can to find it, and it's no where on my computer!

Basically someone had e-mailed me a small section of it in which I opened it from Outlook Express. I continued off of that file, and when I was finished I clicked File > Save, and then closed it so I could send it back to my friend. I totally forgot I should have done save as, but still, I don't see why my computer has no trace of it with the save function from opening it from e-mail. GOD this sucks!

The search function doesn't come up with anything, does anyone have any idea where it might have ended up? Computer Limbo-land?

it may be in your windows/temp directory. Do a search for anything *.doc, and for anything modified today.

Not too bad, but still feels unbearable just due to the fact that I'm doing something that I've already done!

actually, you are supposed to save it

and never ever open email attachments without saving them first. it not only allows the autosave to function properly, but it allows your anti virus to check the file before you open it

from the word help :

Note AutoRecover is not a replacement for regularly saving your documents. If you choose not to save the recovery file after Word opens it, the file is deleted and your unsaved changes are lost. If you save the recovery file, it replaces the original document (unless you specify a new file name).

the reason it usually doesnt come out as nice the second time is because you're PO'ed about losing the first one and want to rewrite it as fast as possible. however, if you think of it as a blessing, and treat this rewrite as a second draft, your essay should turn out much better now that you've had a chance to go over your thoughts for a second time.

I think any chance of me finding is is lost no considering the fact that I opened up the e-mail again, so if it was on my computer, it probably just got overwritten!

It saves it to your profile in the temp directory, its there your just gonna have to search and open all the .doc files you find.

i said used to

what it used to do was auto save the whole document every 5 minutes (or whatever you set it to). i guess the problem with that is that if you didn't like the changes you made more than 5 minutes ago you were stuck with them. so they invented this autorecover feature which doesn't help if you accidentally close the document without saving your changes.

Look for a path similar to this one:
