Met her once at House of Blue, way way before she becomes well-known. Very very sweet girl. She did standard songs at that time; I believe DVD is coming out next month.

A) Just because you only have one song getting radio play, doesn't mean the rest suck.

B) That joke about MTV being the best music awards is really good. In fact, MTV itself is a pretty good joke.

Why would you buy it when you can go to Kazaa and download the whole album in about 10 minutes for free? Makes no sense to me.

MP3 @ 128 is not CD quality. Record Co's don't want you d/ling MP3, they want you to buy the album.

Because some people actually like to support artists and purchase their music. I download a lot of stuff from WinMX, but I still purchase CDs as well.

This is why no one cares about winning a Grammy. The only real music award show out there is the MTV video music awards. I mean what like 10 years ago they gave Jethro Tull best Heavy Metal artist over Metallica, since when is Jethro Tull Heavy Metal?. Get Real. The Grammies is the most useless award show in the world next to the Oscars. Norah isn't my type of music but obviously people like her, so more power to her. This is a gripe against the Grammy's for having absolutely no vision and always going with artists who have a better presentation or image instead of who actually deserves it.

I agree that the Grammys are pretty bogus, but the number of "hits" on an album are not how the Grammys are awarded. The Billboard Music Awards are for hit songs and airplay, not the Grammys.

I'm actually quite sad that Norah Jones got recognized by the Grammy's. It sort of trivializes her talent in my eye's. Though, I'm glad for once that someone is winning a music award that isn't a Whitney Houston/Mariah Carry/Celine Dion wanna be like most of the singers today.

Chain777: The part about the radio was a joke man.. Didn't you see the little "wink" icon next to my comment? Seriously.. You should get some treatment for your Tinitus, go back to your Air Supply 8 tracks and stay away from your tv set.

There are several good songs on her CD, IMO 6 out of 10 songs makes a good CD.

01. Don't Know Why
02. Seven Years
05. Come Away With Me
06. Shoot The Moon
07. Turn Me On
08. Lonestar

I wonder if Nora Jones songs will be played like Carol King songs in 30 years?

Sorry, she is a fine "timely" artist, nothing great, she's a decent song writer with an okay voice.

I consider Gladys Knight, or Donna Summer, or Thelma Houston, or Aretha Franklin to have great voices. Nora Jones is pretty much a joke in the voice category. Like I said, she can sing okay, she MIGHT have made it to the top 10 in American Idol!

I don't know, I guess I reserve "great" for people that write great songs, like Joni Mitchell.

How about that dork who beat James Taylor and Sting for a Grammy! That's when I actually LOL! His performance sucked! Especially when put up against James Taylor. The best part is when he dropped the fake singing voice and actually spoke, he real voice was about an octave lower than his phony singing schik. What a clown

Just so you don't think I'm an old fart, I like Ememin. I think he's quite clever and much more "real" than the other new fake, phony, frauds up there.

Where are the Sting's, Elvis Costello's, Joe Jackson's, Paul Weller's, U2's of the '90's and 00's? Pop music really has sucked for the last 5 or 10 years.

Just because she doesn't belt out songs like those singers doesn't mean her style isn't equally valid artistically.

I like the change of pace with the soft tone singing, instead of the people singing their lungs out, which seems to be a dime a dozen now adays. Whatever the case, very nice cd, lovely voice, and pretty to boot.

Or talent, yeah. Annoying, that.

check amazon.com, #1 sales rank!!

that being said, i think tis 9.99 at mediaplay.. might be at best buy, if roget.

and yea, its nice to hear a nice voice and not some generic screaming "look at how loud i can scream" singing. that and the gyrating voice to show how "talented" you are, just makes it sound like cr@p. just watch any starsearch/idol/apollo type program on these days, a dime a dozen.

You know, I didn't even want to add to this post, but I couldn't stop...sorry, I guess I'm an out of control addict.

Listen, I don't "hate" Norah, I just don't hear anything that moves me; it's an opinion. I might be wrong.

But, I'd like to bet $$$ that you won't know who she is in 10 years.

I couldn't resist. It's "free" money!

...any wagers?

Mod's. I think you better lock this thead. It's getting way off topic. (I promise not to contribute any more...as long as you don't bug me)

The vocalists I mentioned can do it both, they have, among other things, DYNAMICS. Nora is okay, she can sing, she doesn't get too pitchy, if you like her, then great enjoy. I happen to have a sensitive ear to that type of thing and can't listen to her, she hits too many suspect notes for me, for that matter most "vocalists" today can't really sing unless they are in the studio with a million takes, a vocal coach, and digital pitch correction.

Too bad Whitney went crazy, she can really sing.

BTW, my all-time favorite vocalist is Sam Cooke. Listen to "Night Beat" if you want to recalibrate your ears to what it sounds like to hear someone sing dead-on in key all the time, nail licks, have perfect time, and the dynamics and range to really interpret a song.

It's just sad that the "cooperate music machine" has to push Nora Jones on us when there is sooo much really great talent out there. Unfortunately, if you don't have the look, the connections, and/or the will to $u(k d!(k you ain't gonna get a chance today.

Really, check out some Marvin Gaye, Sam Cooke, Doobie Brothers, Steely Dan, ELO, etc... and investigate what talent is all about.

Peace

Wow :Q

I had no idea that this post would generate such a lively discussion - I'm impressed! And it's remained relatively civil as well, which is good to see. Thanks to everyone for making this post so interesting - I've personally learned about artists that I'd never listened to before...

If any of you really enjoy the album and are Etree users, look for her show from Aug 24 of last year at the House of Blues in New Orleans. I pulled it down last night and I'm listening now. It's amazing. Much more energy than the studio versions, in my opinion. And some other songs thrown in, too. I just started listening again it's so good. She might be on Furthur, too, but I can't find her so far.

There are several live shows floating around. This one was broadcast on Swedish TV, so the sound is great. Much better than the audience recording I have from her July 13 show opening for Dave Mathews Band.

If you like the recording, you should consider the DVD that they filmed at the HOB show.... $10.89 at DeepDiscountDVD

Saw most of 'em in concert at the beginning of their careers.
At one, on the worst driving night-time sleet storm in the history of Denver, Steely Dan was the lead-in to Bread.
Bread sounded like burnt-toast after Steely Dan.
Ahhh! The good 'ol days!

PS Add to the list; Cat Stevens, Pink Floyd & Fleetwood Mac...also, EC & the boys & the list gets quite big.
Jose Feliciano

Great thread, BTW. OK! you saw the Dark Side of the Moon, now see The Dark Side of the Sun!
