Normal processor temp?

I've got an Athlon XP 2000+, not overclocked... what should the normal running temp be approximately?

I've seen on average about 56 degrees C, and when running games and stuff, that goes up to 63 or 64... is that running too hot? Should I get a new heatsink or somethin?

Thanks.

What heat sink and fan are you using now?

What's the ambient temperature like?

What's your motherboard and what program (and version) are you using to get results?

Do you have any case fans in your computer and if so, how are they set up?

Heat sink and fan: Thermoengine cooler

Chassis temp: usually about 43 or 44

MSI Ultra2 motherboard, using PCAlert III

One fan blowing air into the computer on top, a side fan blowing air out, and a back fan blowing air out

If there is no problems with your comp, why would you change anything?

That is running a little warm, I look and make sure the hsf is seated properly, check the thermal grease, and maybe if it isnt that, put in a suckhole over the cpu in the side panel (thats what I did)

That is too warm. If is gets 60 or higher, change out the heatsink or something even though technically the processor can handle it but I wouldn't want to risk my XP.

I think your chasis is a bit hot. Put more airflow through your case is probably a better idea than getting a new HSF. I think XP 2000 inevitably runs something like 15 - 20 degrees hotter than your ambient.

I agree: Even with a top of the line hsf, with case temps at 43 degrees, your cpu will be, say, 8-10 degrees warmer under load (estimate). Lowering processor temps to mid 50's temps doesn't justify the expense of a high quality hsf. Instead, add additional case cooling to bring down your system temperature.

Like they all said...and as far as Blade2's comment...anyone who believes that has never burned up an AMD chip. If your case doesn't have an intake (front, most likely front bottom) and exhaust (near the CPU) fan, add them. That alone should lower the case temp by several degrees.

and i'd make the top fan blowing out since heat rises and make the side fan intake so the cool outside air is blowing right onto the cpu. also if you have more fans blowing out than you have blowing in it will start sucking air thru every crack in the case makeing it noisier and dustier. well dustier if your useing filters on the intakes but if you don't then it doesn't matter.

Thanks everyone, after switchin around the fans my average CPU temp is now about 46 degrees and my chassis temp is 35...

I thought the best advice was to turn around the fan on top, because heat rises... So I did that first, that brought it down a few degrees.

Then I turned around the fan blowing in from the back, so it blows air out... basically I was dumb when I put the fan in, heh. It was blowing hot air from the power supply back into the case.

Then I switched around the side fan to suck air into the case, which basically blows right onto the processor...

So basically, I had every fan wrong ;-)
